Now’s the best time to collect seeds and donate them through our Native Seed Collection Program. The seeds you collect today become the forests and wetlands of tomorrow!

Focus species to collect: Black Walnut, Tulip Poplar, Chokecherry, Ninebark, Nannyberry, Steeplebush, Ash, Swamp Milkweed, New England Aster, Foxglove Beardtongue and Blue Vervain!

West Creek Conservancy relies on local ecotype plants, native species uniquely adapted to our region, to restore and strengthen natural areas. By collecting and donating seeds, nuts, and seedlings from the list above, you’re ensuring our restored habitats are resilient, sustainable, and climate-ready.

West Creek Conservancy, in partnership with the Thompson Township Park Commission, are working to acquire and restore a former 40-acre campground adjacent to Thompson Ledges Park.

This new acquisition will eventually provide public access to the existing Lower Park—acreage acquired and protected in 2025 by West Creek—which is to the north of Leroy-Thompson Road.

Every year, migratory birds make incredible journeys across North America, stopping along the way to rest, feed, and refuel. For many of these birds, Northeast Ohio is part of that journey.

Take a closer look at the birds passing through your own backyard or neighborhood. You might be seeing a traveler that has come a very long way. Help make their journey a little safer by dimming or turning off unnecessary lights at night. Reducing light pollution can help birds avoid becoming disoriented as they travel.

The forests, wetlands, streams, and other natural habitats we protect and restore provide places where birds can find the food and shelter they need along the way. Protecting these places helps ensure that wildlife has room to move, rest, and thrive.

Plant trees. Check out a Pawpaw grove. Visit a heron rookery. Not a bad way to spend a fall day!🍁

Our volunteers spent some time helping us plant native trees across a 29-acre property protecting a stretch of Baldwin Creek. And because all work and no play is no fun, we took a little field trip to check out the property’s pawpaw grove and great blue heron rookery. (Those nests!)

A huge thanks to our volunteers who keep showing up and getting it done. The trees may be small now, but the impact of your work is anything but!

This week, keep an eye out for tulip poplar, nannyberry, and ninebark along with other native species that may be reaching maturity in your area. Tulip poplar seeds are found in cone-like structures that begin releasing their winged seeds as they mature. Nannyberry fruits should be ripe and easy to remove from the plant.

When gathering seeds, please ensure they are clean and free of debris before placing them in your collection container. Place your collected seeds in a paper bag to allow air circulation and help prevent moisture and mold. Keep them in a cool, dry place until you can bring them to us at Creekside Collaborative Partners.

Every collection helps build a supply of locally collected native seed that can support future plants and restoration projects across Northeast Ohio.

Please remember: It is illegal to collect from the National Parks or Metropark locations. Please ask permission from homeowners if you are not collecting on your own property.

Last week, students from Southview High School's COLLEGE NOW and GEAR UP Programs had an incredible opportunity to visit Creekside Collaborative Partners, a West Creek Conservancy Signature Preserve in Parma, and experience Creekside Field Kitchen's hands-on learning in a unique outdoor environment. Students explored the connections between agriculture, sustainability, local food systems, and career pathways while engaging in meaningful educational experiences outside the classroom.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this visit possible and for providing these AMAZING students with opportunities to learn, grow, and envision their futures!

It’s Stormwater Awareness Week, a great time to think about where all that rainwater goes after it hits the ground. 🌧️

Stormwater affects our waterways and communities, but the way we care for the land around us can make a difference. Here are a few practical ways you can help:

✅ Plant native plants. Native plants help hold soil in place and allow rainwater to soak into the ground.

✅ Keep leaves and debris out of storm drains. Clearing nearby drains can help keep water moving and reduce pollutants entering our waterways.

✅ Let rain soak in. Rain gardens, planted areas, and other permeable surfaces can help capture rainwater before it becomes runoff.

This week, take a look at how rain moves through your own neighborhood and consider one way you can help keep our shared water clean.
