New City Cleveland

New City Cleveland New City Cleveland is a non-profit community organization in the Buckeye-Woodhill area of Cleveland.

We exist to empower a neighborhood through faith, equity and justice. We provide services for moms, for youth during the summers and for resident seniors. Our vision is to see faith communities and neighborhood residents brought together as God’s beloved community. Through these transformative relationships with one another, we experience God’s love and the power of the gospel to heal from individual and systemic brokenness and make our city new.

Wednesday evenings just got a little more fun in Buckeye–Woodhill! 🏀📖

NEOS and Goodness Grows are doing something beautiful and organic at Artha Woods Park: feeding kids, reading the Jesus Storybook Bible, and hanging out together.

And yes, Vanessa beat some of the boys in basketball. Witnessed.

What’s meant the most is this: Some of the kids who came and left quickly last year came back this summer more relaxed and more open to relationship. Watching those walls come down is what this is all about.

The neighborhood will be out here every Wednesday around 5–5:30 PM this summer. If you’re around, pull up! The more the merrier.

What a meaningful day on East 112th!

We gathered with neighbors, church family, and community partners to officially name this space Francine’s Garden, in honor of Ms. Belk’s late daughter, Francine, whose dream was to one day open a farm-to-table restaurant. It was especially sweet to have Ms. Belk with us to share a few words as we dedicated the garden together.

Our friend Colleen led a collaborative craft project for the kids and shared a beautiful Garden Blessing Liturgy as we prayed over the space. We shared food, told the story of the garden, and celebrated what this place can become.

In a neighborhood that has too often experienced narratives of isolation and separation, any opportunity to gather around beauty and blessing matters deeply. Moments like this remind us that gathering, belonging, and tending together are part of God’s restoration.

And now, the work begins.

This summer, we’ll be in the garden regularly: planting, pruning, tending, and eventually harvesting.

Once school is out, our Summer WorkDay students will join the effort too. We’re excited to grow flowers and fresh produce that nourish our neighbors and increase access to healthy food right here in Buckeye–Woodhill.

Francine’s Garden is being cultivated to bless the community as much as the soil itself. 🌿

Look at these industrious young folks from the neighborhood! We had so much fun selling at Shaker Farmers Market this past Saturday. Such a meaningful opportunity for our kids to practice many life skills. Excited for the next Kids Business Fair!

Memorial Day feels different in a neighborhood like Buckeye-Woodhill.

This neighborhood has carried a lot over the years. Families who came north looking for opportunity. Black families who built lives here in the face of redlining and disinvestment.

And woven into all of that are stories of sacrifice.

Young men from Cleveland’s East Side went off to war from places just like this. Some came home carrying wounds nobody could see. Some never made it back home at all. And the truth is, many of their names are hard to find now.

History does not always preserve Black stories the way it should. But forgotten in the archives does not mean forgotten by God.

So today we remember them. We honor the families who carried grief quietly. We honor the mothers who waited on letters and phone calls. We honor the veterans sitting in our churches and on our porches who still carry stories from long ago.

Memorial Day is not about celebrating war. It is about remembering the cost of it. It is about telling the truth about sacrifice and loss while praying for a better world.

And as Christians, we hold onto the hope that one day Christ will put an end to all of it. No more war. No more funerals. No more grief. Scripture says He will make all things new, and we cling to that promise.

Until then, we remember. We give thanks. And we refuse to let our neighbors be forgotten.

We’ve been working with our neighborhood kids as they prepare for our upcoming Kids Business Fair! 🎉

On May 30th, they’ll be selling their goods at the Shaker North Union Farmers Market, so come out and support these young entrepreneurs as they share what they’ve created!

Our own Vanessa Brakey is coming alongside them as they build a Kingdom-minded business plan from the ground up — from developing ideas to putting them into action.

It’s been such a joy to encourage the next generation to dream, create, and discover that they really can make and sell meaningful things.

WILL WE SEE YOU THERE? Let us know below 👇

A moment for our MamaStrong moms 🥺💕🙏✨

These women are living testimonies to God’s redemptive goodness in the midst of adversity. Being a mom in any context can be heavy and hard, and living on the margins adds some serious weight to it. May we continue to celebrate one another and lift each other up because we are stronger together.

God, be near these ladies and give them strength in their everyday lives.

A happy Mother’s Day from Buckeye-Woodhill 🌼

A Winter Workday Mentor is simply someone who shows up for a student during the workday season. It’s steady, practical, and rooted in being present.

Mentorship here isn’t complicated. It’s just doing things together on purpose—helping a student stay focused, learn the job, and grow in confidence. You don’t need special skills, just a willingness to walk alongside a young neighbor.

And the impact goes both ways. Students grow, and mentors do too.

If you’ve got a few hours and a steady presence to offer, we’d love to have you join us as a Winter Workday Mentor.
