The unemployment rate for Black Americans rose from 6% to 7%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It was the fastest one-month increase in Black unemployment since March-April 2020. Outside of the pandemic, it was the highest gain for Black unemployment since 2012.

The rise was even more stark for Black women, whose jobless rate increased to 7.3% in September from 5.9% in August.

A rise in the Black unemployment rate can sometimes serve as a canary in a coal mine when problems are budding in the labor market
