GreenCityBlueLake Institute Advancing sustainability in Northeast Ohio The GreenCityBlueLake Institute is the sustainability center of The Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

We believe that on rapidly urbanizing planet Earth, the key to sustainability is the development of ecological cities where people can live healthy lives with reduced environmental footprints. We want to help make Northeast Ohio a leader of this transformation — a metropolitan area that demonstrates how urban revitalization can work with nature. We work by thinking and doing. We research the best

solutions, bring people together and participate in community initiatives, conduct demonstration projects, communicate the best ideas, and advocate publicly for change. Ultimately, our job is to promote deeper thinking about what sustainability really means in Northeast Ohio.

In this recent Freshwater article, I write about how we can reasonably expect to make air quality improvements permanent and how it will benefit us all. As a recent cleveland.com opinion piece put it, “we’ve destroyed the myth that telework cannot happen.” For this reason, I’m interested in ...

Cleveland is part of an international study on green redevelopment strategies. The author looks at how green can be more inclusive, and compares progress to date in the Gordon Square and Cleveland EcoVillage developments in the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood.

If equity is not a priority, Cleveland’s vision of becoming a “green city on a blue lake” risks falling victim to the injustices of green gentrification.

As Thoreau counseled, “Shall I not have intelligence with the earth? Am I not partly leaves and vegetable mould myself?”
