8 reasons to take our Fundamentals of Mediation training, in person, on May 12th, 13th, & 20th from 9 am - 5 pm EST. Residents of the city of Cleveland have a full scholarship for this training.

1. It builds high-impact communication skills:
You’ll learn active listening, reframing, and how to ask the right questions, improving everything from workplace conversations to family dynamics.

2. It gives you a clear, structured method to handle conflict:
The five-phase facilitative/empowerment model provides a roadmap so you’re not guessing your way through tense situations. Instead of reacting emotionally, you learn how to guide conversations toward resolution in a calm, deliberate way.

3. It’s hands-on, not just theoretical:
Through demonstrations, role-plays, and case studies, you practice mediating in realistic scenarios. That means you leave not just understanding mediation, but being able to do it.

4. It strengthens leadership and professional credibility:
Mediation skills are highly valued in fields like HR, law, education, healthcare, and management. Being able to navigate disputes is a major career advantage.

5. It helps you work effectively across differences:
By addressing cultural influences and using a client-centered approach, the course prepares you to handle conflicts involving different backgrounds, perspectives, and communication styles, something that’s essential in diverse workplaces and communities.

6. It teaches practical intervention strategies:
You’ll learn when to step in, when to step back, and how to move stuck conversations forward without taking sides.

7. It covers real-world legal context:
Understanding frameworks like the Uniform Mediation Act gives you a foundation in confidentiality, ethics, and the legal boundaries of mediation.

8. It improves everyday life, not just formal mediation:
Even if you never become a professional mediator, these skills help you throughout your day-to-day life.

☀️ Today is about celebrating the place that provides us with what we need and promoting efforts aiming to sustain it.

🤝 Just like the earth, relationships also need to be taken care of if we want to sustain them.

At the Cleveland Mediation Center, we view communities as vessels of positive change, as potential for peace starts with the people. Just like it takes two to start it, it takes one person to approach conflict as an opportunity. Allow us to help you navigate conflict constructively, and together, we can build a just and peaceful community for all.

Since 1981, our small but mighty team at the Cleveland Mediation Center has been striving to serve those in Northeast Ohio and beyond by promoting a just and peaceful community by honoring all people, building their capacity to act, and facilitating opportunities for them to engage in conflict constructively.

We carry out this mission by empowering community members to interact with conflict constructively, so both parties’ needs are met. This can look like facilitating dialogue with neighbors, families, and other groups, offering conflict resolution services to prevent evictions and homelessness, supporting previously incarcerated citizens in their reentry into their communities, and training those who wish to mediate.

Which mediation myths are true or false? Let's talk about it.

Mediation is completely voluntary
Mediation is only for legal disputes
Mediation is timely and affordable
Mediators give legal advice

Myth 1: Mediation is completely voluntary
TRUE - Mediation can only commence if both parties willingly volunteer to participate in the process. Parties have total control over the pace, agenda, and whether to continue the process.

Myth 2: Mediation is only for legal disputes
FALSE - You can use mediation to resolve a variety of conflicts, like workplace, neighbor, tenant and landlord, divorce, and school disputes. CMC offers mediation services for all of these disputes.

Myth 3: Mediation is timely and affordable
TRUE - Mediation is more cost-effective than going through legal system processes like litigation and arbitration. Mediation allows you to skip costly court procedures and fees paid over time.

Myth 4: Mediators give legal advice
FALSE - Mediators act as neutral third parties, meaning they are only there to help you have a productive conversation, not give opinions or offer legal advice.

We offer Shelter Diversion training to communities and organizations interested in using Diversion as a tool to prevent homelessness, with experience conducting workshops in cities nationwide.

To learn more about the program and what it has to offer, contact Mediation Advocate Supervisor Steven Molnar: [email protected]
