Love For Our Elders

Love For Our Elders We're a nonprofit on a mission to fight loneliness with love, one letter at a time.

Dear Elder Mailboxes are letter-writing and drop-off stations where anyone can share kind handwritten notes with local senior communities. No stamps or delivery details needed—just write a note and drop it off right there.

Here’s how it works:
1. A volunteer mailbox keeper sets up and maintains a mailbox
2. They collect and deliver letters to a local senior community regularly
3. Love For Our Elders provides support, letter-writing materials, a map listing, and more.

It’s like Free Little Library, but for snail mail. Link in bio! 💌

Olivia Kim placed a Dear Elder Mailbox at Small World Coffee in Princeton, NJ, which has collected lots of letters! 💌💜 She shared that it's been bringing lots of letters to local nursing home residents that deserve a little extra joy in their life. She's calling her mission to support her local elders "The Sol Initiative" and has already planned her second mailbox at a local pizza shop.

She said: "As a mailbox keeper, I've personally been able to see how just one mailbox can change a community. Local businesses frequently reach out asking to be a part of this project. We have partnered with a center for seniors that have severe medical diagnoses. Every time we drop off the cards, the staff at the nursing home instantly greets us, thanking us for dropping off these cards!"

It only takes 5 minutes to make someone’s day. We always get excited when we see our book Grandma's Letter Exchange in a library, especially Little Free Library! The book is a fun story to inspire little ones to learn about letter-writing. So, so special!

Most of our "Dear Elder" mailboxes stay indoors, as letter-writing and drop-off stations for library- and cafe-goers, but Erin S. & her family in Murrieta, CA keep theirs outside on nice days! Erin Sunderland has been a letter-writer for us for years, and because she spends a lot of time at home taking care of her son, she's decided to spread love out of her home with a mailbox. We were so happy to send her a mailbox— and are excited to see all the love that's flowing in!

This month, our picture book turns two.

I remember being so excited to release it that I couldn’t even wait for my bound author proofs to arrive. I had to make my own. I drove to Staples (a store I’d never needed to visit before) with a folder full of TIFF files (a file type I’d never used before), printed each page on large paper, carefully cut and folded them, laid the pages inside one another, and stapled them together by hand.

It wasn’t perfect. The edges didn’t line up quite right. But holding that homemade copy in my hands felt like holding a dream that had finally taken shape.

Two years later, I’m still so grateful for everyone who has read it, shared it, gifted it, or written to me about it. What started as a stack of giant printouts on my kitchen table is now a book living in homes, in libraries, and in classrooms.

If you’d like a copy, you can order it on Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Check it out at loveforourelders.org/book

When Arlene Loughead was chosen as a Love For Our Elders letter recipient, her family hoped she might receive 90 cards to celebrate her 90th birthday.

Instead, she’s received HUNDREDS — and they’re still arriving.

The cards have come from 48 states and 9 countries, filled with personal stories, kind words, and notes from elementary school students, high school students, and college students. Some were handmade. Some included extra cards for Arlene to send to others. Some even included stamps.

Arlene has always loved sending cards to people — even at 90, it’s still her love language. So being on the receiving end has meant the world.

Her husband Bob, 92, even joined in the fun — highlighting each new state on a map as the letters arrived and carefully admiring every stamp.

Their family has been slowly reading the letters over months, savoring each one.

In their daughter’s words:“Thank you to everyone who sent cards and to the team for doing this program. It’s so refreshing to know that writing letters hasn’t gone away and that there are so many good people in this world.”

Moments like this are exactly why we do what we do. ❤️

Our letters of love program is so special. 💌

Karen was nominated by her friend to receive handmade letters of love from our volunteers, and her reaction said it all. She couldn’t believe so many people took the time to write to her.

Here’s a note that her friend shared with us: "Karen absolutely loves her letters. We read a few to her every day. She dates each one and carefully saves them in a box… and I may need to get her a bigger box soon.”
