**NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT: A DRIVE DOWN LORAIN**

Let’s start at Westown CDC’s office at 9926 Lorain and head west to West 135th Street. Over the next few miles, we’ll pass grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, and neighborhood bars connected to cultures from across Africa, Central and South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, Europe and South Asia.
One of Westown’s greatest assets is how much of the world you can experience along Lorain Avenue.
Just west of our office, Jenn Tacos serves up amazing Mexican street food. Cross the street to find The Great Smart African Market, packed with East African groceries and fish. Just a few doors down, Tienda Guatemala brings the charm of an authentic Central American corner market to the block. Keep moving west to find Latin Vision Bar & Grill, home to delicious arepas, empanadas, and patacones. Finally, at West 110th, Dimitri’s Family Restaurant anchors the neighborhood with the classic comfort food, pancakes, and hearty breakfasts of a traditional Cleveland diner.
As you approach West 117th Street, the international character of the avenue becomes even more visible. Almadina Imported Foods packs a punch with its all-in-one halal meat counter, imported groceries, fresh bakery, and hot prepared foods. Just nearby, Vibe Bar + Patio brings a different kind of community energy as one of Cleveland’s most welcoming, vibrant LGBTQ+ neighborhood bars. At the intersection, Holyland International Import Supermarket stands as a neighborhood anchor. Family-owned since the 1990s, it’s a go-to destination for fresh produce, flatbreads, and specialty spices sourced from all corners of the globe.
Hang a left and head south on West 117th to discover Reef Al Yemen, where traditional Yemeni dishes are served on massive, fire-baked platters designed for family-style sharing. Back on Lorain, Levant Shawarma dishes out perfectly spiced shawarma, falafel, and flame-grilled kebabs. This bustling stretch sits at the heart of what locals proudly call Little Arabia, a rich cultural enclave that has woven itself into the fabric of Westown’s identity.
Keep heading west and the storefronts continue evolving. J-G Taqueria El Milagro and Tapatia’s Taqueria each bring their own spin on Mexican street food. Just a stone's throw away, Pride of Erin serves up the laid-back charm of a classic Irish neighborhood pub, complete with cold Guinness, dartboards, and shuffleboard.
A few blocks down, Chef Carolyn's Exotic Cuisine turns up the heat with Caribbean staples like jerk chicken, savory curries, and warm roti. Right next door, Assad’s Bakery has been a Lorain Avenue legend since 1990. They’ve perfected the art of fresh-baked pita and Lebanese comfort food, growing a loyal following where generations of local families still crowd the hot deli and Mediterranean market.
Pushing toward West 130th Street, the culinary tour hits Arabian Village Market, a vibrant hub for imported groceries and Palestinian specialties. Right down the block, Caffè Roma channels old-school cozy vibes with its Italian pastas, pressed sandwiches, and pastries. Just past it, Der Braumeister keeps the West Side’s historic German roots alive. Serving up crispy schnitzel, warm strudel, and a massive European b**r list, this neighborhood staple has been proudly run by its second and third generations since 1983.
Approaching West 135th Street, Himalayan Restaurant treats diners to incredible Nepali and Indian comfort food, including steaming plates of momo dumplings, rich curries, and fragrant biryani. Finally, our journey culminates at Bad Medicine, a modern listening bar where bartenders spin curated vinyl records through a vintage sound system while shaking up craft cocktails, nonalcoholic drinks, and inventive small plates.
The corridor is still actively evolving and making room for new ideas. Newer concepts operate alongside legacy businesses that have served the neighborhood for decades. This mix creates an energy that is impossible to manufacture. Lorain Avenue doesn’t feel like a cookie-cutter cultural district planned around a theme; it holds onto a rare authenticity that is hard to find anywhere else.
