We are proud to share this piece by our Communications and Marketing Director, Devontá Dickey, published in The Chronicle of Philanthropy's The Commons section.

The piece explores what philanthropy misses when we rely solely on grant reports to understand community impact. Devontá visited our strategy partner at Sunbeam School and observed something no document could capture: a fourth grader who went home and taught her family to read nutrition labels.

We are grateful to Dr. Jennifer and Dr. Jessica Macklin and the entire Hands-On Health team for the remarkable work they do with students and families in our community.

What does it look like when a program's impact travels home with a student? Sometimes the most meaningful evidence of change rarely appears in grant reports — it lives in households, grocery store aisles, and dinner tables where program officers never sit.

Visiting a grantee firsthand revealed what outcomes data couldn't: ripple effects that extend well beyond the program itself.

"We don't guess what communities need. We step outside of the clinic walls and see it for ourselves, then respond in ways that are practical for everyday life," said Jennifer Macklin, co-founder of On Health.
