We are thrilled to be selected as one of First Horizon Bank Foundation's grant recipients! This grant will enable our Library to invest in new technology for our Full Steam Ahead! youth program. Thank you so much to Logan Young and Shane Sewell of First Horizon for taking the time to personally bring the check to us!

This project presents an invaluable opportunity to improve literacy outcomes and provide Bradley County youth with the skills necessary for success in immediate and future educational pursuits. First Horizon is invested in the success of its communities, and a partnership to help ensure our Full STEAM Ahead! initiative helps expand horizons across Bradley County.

Are you hungry yet? National Egg Roll Day rolls around every June 10, celebrating the crispy, savory, deep‑fried favorite that has become a staple in Vietnamese and Chinese‑American cuisine. Whether brown, white, free‑range, or organic eggs, this beloved finger food can hold just about anything — cabbage, pork, bamboo shoots, spices — all wrapped in a thick, egg‑dipped pastry that fries up golden and irresistible.

Though similar to traditional Cantonese spring rolls, the American‑style egg roll has its own identity. According to food historian Andrew Coe, the modern version likely emerged in 1930s New York, even though egg‑roll‑like dishes have been enjoyed in the U.S. since the mid‑1800s. The first widely recognized American egg roll recipe appeared in 1938, and the crunchy classic we know today hasn’t changed much since.

National Egg Roll Day itself is a newer celebration, established in 2019 to honor Van and Kim Nguyen, founders of Van’s Kitchen. After immigrating from Vietnam, they opened their Dallas restaurant in 1986 and began sharing their culture through authentic egg rolls made with fresh ingredients and family tradition — a true American dream story.

And if all this talk of egg rolls has you craving your own homemade batch, there’s a perfect local resource waiting for you: the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library.

Your library is full of Asian cuisine cookbooks, Chinese‑American recipe collections, and Vietnamese culinary guides that can help you learn:

-How to craft traditional and modern egg roll fillings

-Techniques for rolling, sealing, and frying

-Flavor variations from across Asia

-Cultural stories behind the dish

It’s a delicious way to celebrate the holiday, support your local library, and bring a little culinary adventure into your kitchen.

Join us tomorrow, June 9th! Our Sassy Science Series Programs will be held on the second Tuesday of each month and will feature a different Lee University professor presenting on a scientific topic. There is a 40 minute program with a questions and answer session following the program. It is a lively and fun time to listen in and get involved in the discussion. Feel free to bring your lunch as you enjoy the program. This group will meet in the Flex Space upstairs.

The June program will be led by Dr. Mike Franklin.

Demystifying AI with Real Talk
Join us as we break through the confusing jargon, overhyped marketing claims, and general science fiction around the real world of Artificial Intelligence to see what it really is, how it will likely impact us personally and professionally, and how we can both understand it and relate it to others. Dr. Franklin is worked in the world of Artificial Intelligence for more than 20 years and is a highly sought-after international speak on the topic. His research includes future AI algorithms and architecture, multi-agent systems and simulations, and applications of AI to better that world. He has worked in the professional word for decades and in academia for the last 15 years helping to make machines work better with humans (and helping humans to better work with machines). He is currently a Professor at Lee University in Cleveland, TN, where he is involved in both Computer Science and Engineering.
