Today is World Day of Migrants & Refugees ❤️

This observance invites everyone to reflect on the vulnerability of those who are forced to flee from war, poverty, violence, and tragedy, especially children.

In a dedicated message from the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV urged everyone to take responsibility for protecting and supporting displaced people. He notes the dangers that immigrants often face: "...deaths along migration routes, trafficking and exploitation, the recruitment of minors for use in armed conflicts, sexual violence, forced marriages, and the atrocities they have suffered or witnessed during their travels. Their dignity is trampled upon in countless ways."

Today and every day, extend your compassion and support to those in need.

The Chagrin Documentary Film Festival returns October 6–11, and Global Cleveland is proud to be part of this year’s festival.

Together with Cuyahoga County Public Library, we’re serving as a Community Partner for the film, The Secret Reading of Kabul.

In Taliban-ruled Kabul, a group of young women risk everything to secretly read banned books. Inspired by Anne Frank, they film their hidden lives, tracing a path of resistance that leads from Kabul to exile in Tehran and Germany.

Stories like this remind us why creating communities where people from around the world are welcomed, heard, and able to build a future matters, both globally and here in Northeast Ohio.

We hope you’ll add The Secret Reading of Kabul to your lineup.

Welcoming Week may be over, but the energy is still going.

Throughout the week, people came together across Northeast Ohio to connect, learn, share resources, and celebrate the many communities that call our region home.

A huge thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, community partners, panelists, and staff who helped make it all happen, and to everyone who joined us at an event, participated in a conversation, or helped spread the word.

We were also proud to join communities across the country and around the world taking part in Welcoming Week and continuing the work of building places where people can belong, contribute, and thrive.

Thank you for being part of it.

TOMORROW is the final event of Welcoming Week, The Cleveland Era: A Global Welcome!

Hosted in the Cleveland City Hall Rotunda, this public event will bring together residents, international community members, civic leaders, consular representatives, dignitaries, and community partners for an evening of conversation, connection, food, and entertainment.

The program will explore Cleveland’s growing global presence, the role of newcomers and immigrant communities in shaping the city’s civic, cultural, and economic life, and how welcoming is central to Cleveland’s future. The discussion will also connect to the broader Cleveland ERA vision, including affordability, neighborhood vibrancy, public safety, economic growth, modern infrastructure, business attraction, and building a City Hall that works more efficiently for residents and businesses.

Through a City Club-style conversation and State of the City-style discussion, attendees will hear about Cleveland’s next chapter as a place of belonging, opportunity, global partnership, and international connection.
