With nearly 45 years of leadership, our innovative approach addressing domestic violence and child abuse serves both children and adults to help break the cycle of violence

. Journey Center for Safety and Healing provides services that foster safety and healing for those affected by child abuse and domestic violence; and prevents abuse through education, advocacy, and systemic change. Journey Center values Empowerment, Resiliency, Safety, Inclusion, Integrity, and Connectedness. We envision a community where safety and well-being are achieved by empowering people to find a path toward healthy, thriving relationships. Journey Center’s model is grounded in self-determination and operates from a strengths based philosophy while incorporating best practices and evidence based strategies. Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Gun violence and intimate partner violence are inextricably linked; abusers with fi****ms are 5 times more likely to kill their victims.

Even when a firearm is not used directly against the victim, the mere possession of a firearm correlates with increased severity of abuse. Guns are used by abusers to further exert coercive control through threats, intimidation, and emotional abuse; 4.5 million women have reported being threatened with a gun by an intimate partner.

No one should live in fear of a partner with a gun.

At Journey Center, we operate an emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence. With the support of generous donors and volunteers, we provide more than 45,000 meals every year. However, we are in urgent need of donations to continue offering continental breakfast and lunch every weekday, as well as hot dinner seven days a week.

Through our Meals That Heal program, you can help us provide essential nourishment to our clients and their children. If you would like to donate a meal, visit our website: https://ow.ly/GK7j50YV53s or connect with Lynette at [email protected]. Your support is crucial in helping us make a difference.

10 Tips to Have an Informed Conversation about Domestic Violence:

Sadly, a number of high-profile domestic violence homicides have recently made news, and we know there are many more stories that will never get coverage.

No matter what, it's crucial for journalists to cover domestic violence stories through a critical and trauma-informed lens and make sure their coverage is accurately rooted in the realities of survivors’ experiences. Coverage should never be inaccurate or, worse, retraumatizing.

NNEDV has a number of resources and other considerations to help. Learn more in our to Have an Informed Conversation about Domestic Violence: https://buff.ly/KEyT93c

Our emergency shelter is in urgent need of donations to support our Meals that Heal program. We rely on our community’s generosity to provide nourishing meals to survivors. You can help a few different ways by:

- Ordering food from a restaurant and having it delivered to our shelter.
- Bringing in a homemade meal to share with those in need.
- Making a monetary donation, and we will handle the rest by providing the food.

If you are interested in donating to support survivors, visit our website: https://ow.ly/XvwV50YV4Ti or please contact Lynette at [email protected]. Your support can make a meaningful difference in their lives.

May is dedicated to spreading the word that mental health is something that everyone should care about. Everyone faces challenges that can impact their mental health, especially those who have experienced trauma.

Domestic violence survivors are 3 times more likely to have a mental health condition and children who witness abuse are 3 times more likely to use mental health services. It is important to practice self-care, take care of your mental health, and reach out for support when you need it.
