When a lighting fixture caught fire in a commercial building in Little Compton, Rhode Island, an employee was able to successfully extinguish it with a portable fire extinguisher before fire crews arrived.

Routine inspections, NFPA 10 compliance, and clearly marked equipment gave staff what they needed to act immediately, resulting in no injuries or damage.

This year, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)'s Fire Prevention Week focuses on safe charging and reducing lithium-ion battery fire risks, a growing concern as battery-powered tools, devices, and charging areas become more common in commercial spaces.

For an early-stage fire involving a rechargeable device, a portable fire extinguisher may help protect surrounding property or create a path of egress while emergency responders are contacted. Portable extinguishers are intended for early-stage fires of limited size and should not be considered a substitute for emergency response.

NFPA 10 does not currently include a lithium-ion battery classification, including a Class L classification. Know what your equipment is actually rated for, and make sure fire safety planning reflects the limitations of current extinguisher classifications.
