This year the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation will celebrate the 80th Annual One World Day on Sunday, August 30, its premier event!

The first One World Day Parade was established as part of the Sesquicentennial Celebration of the City of Cleveland Founders Day, on July 21, 1946.

On that day, 175,000 Clevelanders gathered to watch 50 floats organized by the various Cultural Gardens under the leadership of Founder Leopold Weidenthal and President Charles J. Wolfram.

While the Hungarian Cultural Garden of Cleveland took first place among the floats, the Greek Cultural Garden took a respectable third place.

“The stalwart sons and daughters of Greece amazed the crowd by walking the whole seven-mile course with their float, which carried a replica of the Parthenon in Athens. The float, bearing the emblem “Cradle of Democracy,” won a third prize popularity award of $25.”

In honor of the Centennial of Founder’s Day in Cleveland, on July 22, 1896, famous Cleveland son John D. Rockefeller, donated the wooded acreage that we all now call Rockefeller Park.

Upon this land are located the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. This park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places twice: once for the cultural gardens, and again for its historic bridges.

Let us take a moment to fondly remember the illustrious man who made it all possible.

SNEAK PEEK into the artist’s workshop.

Nicholas Fairplay, Master Stone Carver, is hard at work bringing to life the stone frieze entitled “The Gift of Greece to Civilization.”

Here we can see the plaster casts taking shape prior to the final carving onto Indiana limestone.
