Wondering what happens at an audiology earmold impression appointment? In this quick video, you’ll see an audiology doctoral extern examine your ear, place a gentle foam block in the canal, and inject silicone material to capture the exact shape of your ear canal and outer ear.

These impressions are used for both custom hearing aids and custom hearing protection, such as musician earplugs, and swim plugs. You’ll experience mild pressure, not pain, and the material is safely removed after a few minutes. Custom molds are utilized to ensure appropriate fit whether to protect your hearing or provide the necessary output for your hearing aids.

Tools Audiologists Use - The Tympanometer
A Tympanometer is a machine that uses sound and pressure to measure the function of your tympanic membrane (ear drum) and middle ear (space behind your ear drum). It can help us determine pathology like fluid behind the eardrum, a hole in the eardrum, or eustachian tube dysfunction which can affect your hearing.
Tympanometers also have acoustic reflex testing, which can help your audiologist determine the type of your hearing loss and the function of the cranial nerves involved.

Getting To Know the Tools Audiologists Use: The Otoscope
Whether you’re at the audiologist for a hearing exam, a vestibular (balance) exam, or a hearing aid check, the appointment often starts with a look in your ear canals with an otoscope. This tool allows the audiologist to evaluate for the presence of ear wax or a foreign body in the ear canals, and the appearance of the ear drums and canals. This information helps lead clinical decision making and sets expectations for findings on exam.
