Scottish Country Dancing is a traditional social folk dance from Scotland, and is related to Contra, English Country, Irish Set, and American Square Dancing. As with all of these forms, the dances are a series of patterns in a "set" of 4–10 people, danced to fun folk music. Scottish Country dancing has been influenced by ballet and uses precise footwork as well. But no worries, all you need to do to get started is walk! Scottish Country Dancing is a great way to develop your musical awareness, physical coordination, and fitness, but above all to have a lot of fun!
An ability to count to eight and knowing your right from your left is a bonus, but in our 8 week beginner class we will take you from no knowledge of music or dance to having a solid foundation of the basics of Scottish country dancing and music. There is no expectation to be coordinated or dance perfectly.
It's just for fun!
Come solo, with a partner, or with friends. You don't need to be
Scottish either—all are welcome!
There's no expectation to perform outside of lessons. Dances are
taught with gender-neutral terminology and you may dance with anyone else in class.
There is no dress code in class, but you should wear something that is comfortable to move around in. Many dancers choose to wear "ghillies" or "pumps" (or soft leather ballet shoes) after they have been dancing for a while, but any clean footwear you find comfortable is acceptable.
