We celebrate Black History Month by honoring the contributions of African-Americans who work to keep the country safe. The U.S. Coast Guard salutes and remembers all past and present members and their families for their sacrifice and service.

As we celebrate  , we will take a look back on our Shipmates who came before us, setting a path for so many to follow

As a Coast Guard aviation officer, Captain Bobby Charles Wilks broke many color barriers. He was the Service’s first aviator of color and its first African American helicopter pilot. He later became the Coast Guard’s first non-white aviation operations officer and air station executive officer. In 1977, he became the first recognized African American in the Service to achieve the rank of captain. And, in 1979, he became the first officer of color to command a Coast Guard air station.
