Hello Italian Greyhound Lovers!
IGRF Ohio wants to introduce our newest foster Iggy......Serafina!
Serafina is about 7-8yo and came into rescue at no fault of her own, as she came in as a shelter transfer where she'd been brought in as a stray. No owners came forward and due to our amazing partnership with this shelter, we were able to pick up Sweet Serafina on Monday morning. She is such a sweet little girl and we are so excited to help her on her way to her new best life!
Almost immediately however after bringing her home, her foster mom noticed some concerning abnormal bruising across her lower abdomen, ge****ls, thighs and some creeping up her chest. Thankfully we acted fast and brought her to the emergency vet and after an exam, bloodwork and chest xrays to rule out thoracic cancers.......the amazing vets found that she had little to no platelets. 😔 IYKYK.......low to no platelets is very serious and can be caused by a few things, so an abdominal ultrasound and two types of tick-born illness tests were done and at this point Serafina's vets are leaning towards ITP.
What is ITP you ask?
ITP stands for Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia and is a potential health concern for Italian Greyhounds, where their immune system mistakenly attacks their own platelets, leading to a low platelet count and increased risk of bleeding; this breed is considered somewhat predisposed to autoimmune disorders, making them susceptible to ITP. Signs of ITP in Italian Greyhounds can include spontaneous bruising, bleeding gums, bloody stool, nosebleeds, blood in the urine, lethargy, pale gums, and decreased appetite.
Serafina's demeanor is still sweet and cuddly and she's been eating very well, and the vet staff have fallen in love with her so much the oncology nurses did a holiday fashion show with her and sent us these adorable pictures.
Today we had some good news after a couple of days of continued little to no platelet counts......today Serafina's platelet count is at 8,000! Her veterinarian said she is not out of the woods though and wants to keep her hospitalized until her platelet count is near 30,000 as this will mean she is not at risk for spontaneous bleeding.
Diagnosis and treatment of ITP is VERY EXPENSIVE, so today we are asking for help via a tax-deductible donation to the IGRF to help with the ongoing costs of Serafina's veterinary care....currently at around $8000. We have posted the two estimates we have received so far. Each night Serafina is hospitalized costs around $1000-$1400, and if she continues to improve we are hoping she can come home this weekend.
If anyone can forego the price of a Starbucks this week, and donate that to Serafina's care, we would be eternally grateful.
You can donate online at the below and it will go directly to IGRF and our main fund, via PayPal. The below link will take you to the main IGRF website (www.igrescue.com) and on the home page is the link to donate via PayPal. For some reason when I link the PayPal page directly to this post, after a few clicks the page stops working. So please use the below link to donate via PayPal instead.
