This coming 4th of July 2023 celebrates 247 years of independence. While every 4th of July is a mile stone for our nation’s independence, this 4th of July marks a significant milestone for White County Georgia. An event took place in White County Georgia on July 4th, 1923 at the Kellum farm, hosted by Medford and Elizabeth Kellum.
Medford and Elizabeth Kellum moved to White County in 1922 and settled in an area about 8 miles north of Cleveland in what is now called Kellum Valley. They were of considerable wealth as Mrs. Kellum was heiress to her father and grandfather’s wealth as well as being a 2nd cousin to Andrew Carnegie. The Kellums desired seclusion. However, they were generous and considerate of the community on many occasions.
In 1923 the Kellums invited the people of White County to a July 4th barbecue dinner at their farm. About 1800 people attended. It was a well-remembered event as they brought in store bought ice-cream, a circus, and fireworks. This event is documented in the book “A History of White County 1857 to 1980”.
To commemorate 100 years since this event Nadine and I would like to invite anyone to our property at Glenn’s Orchard in Kellum Valley on July 4th from noon to dark. We will not provide food so please feel free to bring a picnic basket or just come and enjoy the day. We have bathroom facilities, a covered tent with tables and chairs, and games. (No alcohol please)
