Butterflies & Lilies Community Care Center

Butterflies & Lilies Community Care Center Butterflies and Lilies Community Care Center works to meet the practical needs of Greater Cleveland Tuesday through Thursday we host an after-school hangout.

Butterflies & Lilies Community Care Center was founded in February 2021 by Constance Johnson and Octavia Manuel. We are in the Central /Fairfax community and serve clients from all of the greater Cleveland area. The Center was established with the goal of being a neighborhood resource that helps provide for the practical needs of individuals and families who struggle with economic challenges. Our

customers are a mix of the working poor, seniors, the disabled, those whose housing is insecure and the homeless. We accept donated items, everything from household products and kitchenware to shoes and clothing to food, and we work with area social workers and case managers to identify clients in need of assistance. Donated items are then gifted to clients based on the need at no cost. From 9am – 12pm Monday through Friday we assist referred case workers and their clients. Tuesday through Friday from 12pm – 4pm we open our doors and welcome our neighbors to come and shop the donated items in our Community Closet at no cost. The food pantry is accessible whenever a volunteer is on site. We provide a safe space for them to be with friends, read, play games, do arts, and craft projects and just be kids. Attendees are served fresh fruit, snacks, and water.

There is a little coffee shop, where two people arrive and approached the counter.

“Five coffees please. Two for us and three hanging.”

They paid, they took their two coffees and left.

I asked the waiter. "What’s this about hanging coffees?"

“Wait and you'll see."

Some more people came in.

Two girls asked for a coffee each, they paid & left.

The following order was for seven coffees and it was made by three women - ‘three for them and four hanging coffees.’

I was left wondering...what is the meaning of the hanging coffees, they leave.

Then, a man dressed in worn clothes, who looks like he might be homeless, arrives at the counter and asks sincerely...

“Do you have a coffee hanging?"

“Yes we do, sir.”

They serve him a coffee.... I got my answer.

People pay in advance for a coffee that will be served to whoever can't afford a hot drink.

This tradition started in Naples.

Amazingly, it has spread throughout the world’s cities and towns.

It’s also possible to order not only "hanging coffees" but also a sandwich or a full low cost meal.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all start doing this in the cities and towns where we live?

Small kindnesses like this can impact so many lives, in ways we could never imagine.

Maybe we should all try it.😊❤️
