For years, Mrs. Malka Leah Koval and her family experienced Bikur Cholim’s care firsthand as her husband, Mordechai (Murray) z"l, faced a prolonged illness and many hospital stays throughout Cleveland's medical facilities. During those difficult days, our hospitality lounges were a place to find kosher food and recharge.

But Mrs. Koval also saw an opportunity to make that support even better.
“During the course of Mordechai’s many hospitalizations, I often went to the Bikur Cholim room in search of something to eat or drink. I wished for a wider selection of fresh food options. As a caregiver, I needed nutritional as well as emotional support. Sitting by a bedside hour after hour, day after day, can be draining, and something fresh can make a huge difference.”
She shared the idea with Bikur Cholim, and we worked together to make it happen. Following her husband’s passing, Mrs. Koval generously sponsored these new healthy offerings for the month of August at the Cleveland Clinic in memory of R’ Mordechai Dov (Murray) ben R’ Chaim Baruch z”l. (We hope to offer similar food enhancements in our other hospital lounges soon.)

A letter from our President, Dr. Meir (Michael) Pollack, announcing the launch of our Elul Campaign:

Dear Friend,

Recently, I was called to the ER at Hillcrest Hospital to examine a mother from Israel whose young child is undergoing treatment for advanced cancer here in Cleveland. For months she has been devoted entirely to her child’s care, and now she suddenly found herself needing an urgent procedure and surgery.

At that moment, Bikur Cholim’s care reached another layer. We were already supporting her child. Now, we could stand beside her mother as well—helping the caregiver at her time of need.

Our patient care coordinators and volunteers make sure families never face frightening moments without support. But this work depends on you.

Our fiscal year has just begun, and with an annual budget of $2.4 million, we must raise $550,000 through our Elul Campaign to help meet the needs of the families who depend on us. At a time when our funds are at their lowest and requests for assistance continue to grow, your support is especially critical.

For Sholom Schonfeld, Director of Facilities and Transportation at Bikur Cholim, some of the most meaningful moments on the job come from seeing a need and finding a way to help.

A few week ago, Sholom received a call from an elderly woman recovering from hip surgery. Through tears, she explained that because she lived alone, she couldn’t get in and out of bed on her own and had been sleeping upright in a chair with her legs propped on a stool.

Realizing an electric lift recliner could make all the difference, Sholom delivered one that day, allowing her to safely rest, stand, and regain her independence.

A typical day for Sholom includes repairing our guest homes, maintaining our handicapped-accessible van, delivering medical equipment, and responding whenever someone needs help.

“When you can ease someone’s burden, even a little, it’s a good feeling,” says Sholom. “That’s where I want to be.”

As Bikur Cholim continues to grow, so does the need. There are others in tears waiting for YOU! Join Sholom’s team. We had the unique privilege of hosting Shmueli Rabinowitz, Executive Director of Bikur Cholim of Toronto.

His visit included a grand tour of the Bikur Cholim operations including staying in one of our guest homes, visiting the Cleveland Clinic's hospitality lounge, meeting with staff, and of course, enjoying some of the delicious kosher food offerings we have here in Cleveland.

"Although each Bikur Cholim is independent, we do learn from each other and share resources," states the Rabbi.
