We had a good time at the November meeting! Ginnie Conway gave an explanation of how alcohol inks became an art medium and how to use them. Then we experimented with various techniques on paper and tile. There were three visitors at the meeting, including a young man who shared his intricate drawings with us. Making something during the meeting was enjoyable. Thanks, Ginny!

Thanks to everyone who came to our monthly meeting last Tuesday at South Fork Recreation Center.
Our talented guest speaker, Jonathan Hayes, spoke briefly about his artistic background and education. He told us about his 2 favorite art books which greatly influenced his art career.
He then gave a painting demonstration of the park right next to our meeting place in the picnic pavilion.
I'll share more pictures and info about his very educational narration of the choices he made in his demonstration painting.
Please like our Muddy River page and share!

Here is the biography of our wonderfully talented guest speaker.Jonathan Hayes Artist Bio

Jonathan Hayes (b.1971) is a native North Carolinian whose first interest in painting and drawing was generated by his parents, both amateur painters without any formal training. This interest, always encouraged, only grew and led to his first formal training at East Carolina University (ECU) where he received his bachelor’s degree in fine art with a concentration in painting. After leaving ECU, Jonathan was accepted in the painting program at the George Washington University (GW) and spent the years from 1995 through 1998 studying under William Woodward, Frank Wright, and Arthur Hall Smith. His first year at GW he was the recipient of a full teaching assistant scholarship and several drawing awards, including a study abroad program in Greece during the summer of 1996. While Woodward helped Jonathan develop techniques in painting through the likes of Velazquez, Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn; Wright helped develop his drawing technique based squarely on those of the Old Italian and French masters from the Renaissance onward. It was Smith, however, a student of Mark Tobey, who introduced Jonathan to the works of Modern Masters of the 20th century such as Diebenkorn, Fischl, Park, and Tobey. This eclectic mix of influences has allowed Jonathan to develop into an artist who is both heavily influenced by traditional modes of painting, but also looks to contemporary ideas about subject, composition, and expression. Therefore, representation has become less about accuracy of depiction or being descriptive than it is about exploring the various moods and forms found in the visual world.
