Every year, on the Fourth of July, we celebrate freedom. Families gather for barbecues, fireworks light up the night sky, and we remember the courage it took to build a nation founded on liberty and justice for all.
But for too many people, even right here in Texas, freedom is still just an idea, not a reality.
Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing criminal enterprises in the world. It generates over $150 billion a year, more than Starbucks, Nike, and Google combined. And it thrives in the shadows of our communities, often hiding in plain sight.
Victims aren’t just taken, they’re targeted. Traffickers prey on vulnerability: young people, those in foster care, immigrants, runaways, and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These victims are groomed, manipulated, and sold; their basic human rights are stolen for someone else’s profit.
At Breaking the Chains of Human Trafficking, we work every day to change that. Through advocacy, education, survivor support, and legislative reform, we’re pushing for a world where no one has to live in fear of being trafficked. We've helped pass critical legislation like SB 1212 and the Julia Wells Act (SB 1831) and many others in Texas laws that raise penalties for traffickers, expand training, and protect those most at risk.
But laws alone are not enough. Change requires awareness. It requires every one of us to recognize that freedom is not something we can afford to take for granted.
This July 4th, as you celebrate your freedom, take a moment to think about those who are still fighting for theirs.
Learn the signs of human trafficking.
Speak up if you suspect someone is being exploited.
Support organizations that serve survivors.
You can advocate for stronger protections and prevention in your community.
The true spirit of Independence Day is not just about fireworks; it’s about the freedom to live safely, with dignity, and without fear. Let’s use our voices, our platforms, and our freedom to help others gain theirs.
