October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and purple is more than just a color. It is a symbol of courage, survival, strength, and hope for those impacted by domestic violence.

Purple represents our commitment to standing alongside survivors, honoring those who have lost their lives to domestic violence, and raising awareness about the importance of ending abuse.

For survivors, seeing someone wear purple can be a powerful reminder that:

💜 You deserve safety and respect. Everyone deserves a relationship free from fear, violence, and control.

💜 DAY 14 OF HOPE: Help Is Just a Scan Away! 💜

Did you know that help may be closer than you think?

The Family Crisis Center of Johnson County has placed signs with QR codes in private spaces throughout our community, including:

💜 Restrooms in local businesses

💜 Doctor's offices and medical facilities

💜 Local colleges

💜 Community agencies

💜 Changing rooms and fitting rooms

Why these locations? Because we understand that someone experiencing domestic violence may not have the privacy or safety to make a phone call or ask for help.

These signs are intentionally placed in areas where survivors may have a few moments alone to discreetly scan a QR code and complete a form requesting assistance.

📱 How does it work?

Simply scan the QR code, complete the assistance request form, and an advocate from The Family Crisis Center will reach out after receiving your submission.

💜 Sometimes, hope begins with just a few private moments and the courage to reach out.

💜 DAY 13 OF HOPE: Hope is Getting Your Independence Back

Did you know that if you share a cell phone plan with an abusive partner, there may be options to safely separate your phone line?

A cell phone can be a lifeline—but it can also be used as a tool for control. An abusive partner who controls the account may have access to billing information, phone records, or other account information that can create safety concerns.

📱 There are laws designed to help survivors.

Under the federal Safe Connections Act, survivors of domestic violence and certain other crimes can request that their wireless provider separate their phone line—and qualifying lines of people in their care—from a shared account with an abuser.

Texas also has protections under HB 1372 (Texas Family Code § 85.0225). A survivor seeking a protective order can ask the court to order their wireless number, and eligible children’s numbers, separated from the abuser’s account.

For many survivors, keeping their phone number means keeping an important connection to family, work, children’s schools, doctors, advocates, and other support systems.

Hope is knowing that someone else’s name on the phone bill doesn’t have to keep you connected to them.

For survivors of domestic violence, taking the next step toward safety can feel overwhelming, especially when legal concerns are involved.

Hope is knowing you don’t have to navigate the legal system alone. 💜

Today, we’re highlighting an incredible statewide resource: Texas Advocacy Project (TAP).

Texas Advocacy Project provides FREE legal services and support to survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and other forms of abuse.

⚖️ Legal assistance may include:

* Protective orders
* Child custody and family law matters
* Housing and financial concerns
* Safety planning and legal guidance
* Assistance navigating the civil legal system

Survivors deserve to understand their rights, explore their options, and make informed decisions about their futures.

💜 Day 11 of Hope: Believing in a Better Future 💜

For survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of trauma, hope is more than simply wishing for better days. It is the belief that a better future is possible, even when the path forward feels uncertain.

Hope is believing that the pain of yesterday does not have to define tomorrow. It is finding the courage to take one small step forward, reclaim a sense of safety, and begin imagining a life beyond survival.

Healing is not always a straight path, and hope doesn’t mean the journey will be easy. It means recognizing that your story is still being written, and the chapters ahead can hold peace, safety, joy, and new beginnings.

At Johnson County Family Crisis Center, we believe every survivor deserves the opportunity to build a future free from fear. We are here to walk alongside survivors as they rediscover their strength, reclaim their choices, and find hope in what lies ahead.
