The Value of Volunteering: Commitment, Responsibility and Engagement

Volunteering is a fundamental part of our commitment to advancing human rights education and supporting our communities.

This image captures a team of people united by a common goal: dedicating their time, skills and energy to an effort that can make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of others.

Being a volunteer means choosing to get involved, taking responsibility and actively contributing to building a more inclusive, compassionate and respectful society where everyone’s rights are recognized and protected.

Our work is made stronger by the people who choose to give their time and support. That is why we continue to welcome those who share these values and are ready to turn them into meaningful action.

Becoming a volunteer means not simply witnessing change, but being part of making it happen.

United through education, we grow in respect. United as a community, we build a future for everyone.

When a community comes together, listens, and learns from one another, our differences become a source of strength rather than a distance between us. Human rights education means teaching the values of dignity, respect, equality, and solidarity — but, above all, it means building connections, creating understanding, and bringing people together.

Educating children about human rights means teaching them the value of respect, freedom, equality, and kindness. It means helping them understand that every person matters, that our differences make us stronger, and that no one should ever feel excluded or less important than others.

The future of our community begins with them. If we teach children today to listen, respect, and help others, tomorrow we can have a more united, fair, and welcoming society. That is why educating children about human rights is a responsibility we all share: families, schools, and the community, together.

Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to build a more just, inclusive, and peaceful world.

Teaching children and young people about human rights helps them understand their dignity, recognize injustice, respect others, and become active citizens who stand up for equality and freedom.

Learning about human rights is the first step toward protecting them — and understanding the rights of others is the foundation of respect, empathy, and solidarity.

Let’s educate, empower, and inspire the next generation to know their rights and defend human dignity for everyone.

Nelson Mandela, one of the most recognizable human rights symbols of the twentieth century, is a man whose dedication to the liberties of his people inspires human rights advocates throughout the world. Born in Transkei, South Africa, Mandela was the son of a tribal chief, and educated himself with a university degree and law degree. In 1944, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and actively worked to abolish the apartheid policies of the ruling National Party.

On trial for his actions, Mandela declared, “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and achieve. But if need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

Sentenced to life imprisonment, Mandela became a powerful symbol of resistance for the rising anti-apartheid movement, repeatedly refusing to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom. Finally released in February 1990, he intensified the battle against oppression to attain the goals he and others had set out to accomplish almost four decades earlier.

In May 1994, Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president, a position he held until 1999. He presided over the transition from minority rule and apartheid, winning international respect for his advocacy of national and international reconciliation.
