Way to go Alex!!!
CONGRATULATIONS to Alex Short who was awarded the highest rank of Eagle Scout for designing, constructing, launching and maintaining his Floating Wetland Island in Crescent Lake!
It started from signing up for community service for a school project in Feb 2017. Alex and Aiden Short enjoyed volunteering with Friends of Crescent Lake and removing the invasive plants. They traveled from Safety Harbor to volunteer at each FOCL monthly cleanup. Alex began talking to Jim Bays, wetland ecologist and field organizer for FOCL, about the old turtle islands that used to be in the lake. Alex was starting to look for ideas for an Eagle Scout project. At each cleanup he would talk with Jim about different ways to improve the lake water quality. In their discussion it was mentioned that Jim was working on creating a floating wetland island to see the affect it had on improving the water quality of the Crescent Lake. Alex thought that was a great idea and offered to create a manmade floating wetland island to host native plants. He worked with Jim designing a prototype. After doing research and lots of planning his project idea was approved by Boy Scouts of America for his Eagle Scout Project. With the help of family and friends the floating wetland island was built under his supervision. Friends of Crescent Lake helped finish and launch his island in January 2018. He has continued to monitor its progress at the monthly cleanups. The success of his floating island with the help of Mr. Bays, the Friends of Crescent Lake, the support of Tampa Bay Estuary Program and Keep Pinellas Beautiful has helped him earn the highest BSA rank of an Eagle Scout.
"I'm very proud of the project and excited to become an Eagle Scout," Ales said. "Then I can take my knowledge of building up to be an Eagle Scout, and help others become Eagle Scouts."
