Congratulations to CCSC Opti Sailors Sage Dovbniak and Sasha Shortov for qualifying for the 2027 USODA Team Trials at the 2026 National Championships at Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club in Beach Haven, New Jersey!

Sage qualified at Girls Nationals, followed closely by Sasha qualifying at Nationals in the following days. This will be the second Team Trials Sage and Sasha have qualified for, and we are so excited to see them represent CCSC for a second year in a row alongside Austin Lee (who also qualified for a second time at Nationals!).

In what seemed like a flash, the 2026 Summer Camp season at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center has come to a close. We welcomed over 500 campers over the past 10 weeks and we are so grateful for each camper who spent a part of their summer with us!

We had some exciting moments, from Clearwater Challenge wins to dolphin spotting, fish catching and sandbar shell hunting- but most of all, our campers left more confident on the water- and many of them ready to join our youth race teams!

If your kids are interested in continuing sailing with us year round, be sure to join us for our Race Team Open House at CCSC on Friday, August 21 at 5:30PM.

We hope to see everyone on the water again next year- if not sooner! Registration for Camp 2027 opens on January 1st- be sure to mark your calendars and we’ll see you on the water next year! ⛵️🌊☀️

2026 OPTIMIST US NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2026: July 28-August 1 CCSC’s Red, White and Blue Opti team traveled to Beach Haven, New Jersey to attend the USODA Optimist National Championship (as well as Girls Nationals for sailor Sage), a first for almost all members of the team.

The week started off with heavy winds- a challenge our team took on with stride, no strangers to breeze thanks to Coach Mateo. As Sage was challenged against the best girls in the country at Girls Nationals, the team practiced in the new venue on Tuesday, with Sage achieving her goal of qualifying for Team Trials and achieving a top 30% score following in Austin’s footsteps earlier this month.

The team all rigged for heavy winds on Day 1, competing against the best of the best sailors around the country (and beyond) for four days straight, eventually splitting off into Gold and Silver fleets. Our sailors put in their very best efforts, all showing competitive spirit to the very end (“I’m really tired, but I’m going to do EVEN BETTER today, said Carderock on the last morning— and he did!).

Three of our sailors, including Sasha, Sage and Austin (for the second time!) qualified for Team Trials during this event (all achieving better than top 50% scores) but all of our sailors showed up with perseverance through heavy winds, ripped sails, protests and more and are even more fired up for a great season of sailing in Florida (and beyond) starting up again in just a couple of weeks!

Thanks as always to Coach Mateo for battling long hot days, tired kids and always giving your all as a coach, Veteran Opti sailor Henry for your assistant coaching and to the parents who consistently give the kids the opportunity to pursue sailing in new venues! Here’s to a GREAT season ahead (and looking forward to coming back to the Jersey Shore for Team Trials!)

This month’s Member of the Month is longtime member and Sunfish sailor Alix Biel! Alix has been a loyal CCSC member for over a decade; and a Sunfish sailor since she was 10 years old. Alix recently moved from New Jersey to Clearwater where she competed in our Summer Wednesday Night Race Series, and has served as CCSC Board President since October 2025.

From: New York, New York

Member For: 15+ years Around 2010, when a friend told her about Kurt Taublee’s (CCSC partner and former board president) adult racing clinics.

Sailing since: She 10 years old. She went to summer camp and was too small for a flying junior so she took the sunfish- and never looked back!

Favorite Boat to sail: The Sunfish! “The Sunfish is simple, elegant and manageable- but raceable. You can enjoy it but also get pretty competitive,” Alix says.

Most memorable sailing experience: The summer she was 16, Alix lived on a Morgan 45 and sailed around the Francis Drake Channel in the Caribbean. She learned to scuba dive and sail big boats. “It’s amazing how the physics are the same in a Sunfish and a Morgan 45,” she recalls.

What is your favorite part about sailing at CCSC: “This is a beautiful body of water to sail on; I haven’t yet gotten tired of it! You have the safety of people watching the radar and you can drink it in and sail around without worries or anything getting in the way of pure sailing.”

What’s next for your sailing journey: “I would like to make myself a competitive Sunfish racer!” she decides. Alix is already a part of the US Sunfish Class Association, including serving as editor of their newsletter. “I’m constantly editing about other people’s racing- and now I want to get into it,” she says.

“The best way to sail and get better at sailing is ‘time in the tub’ as they say. You need to make time for it. Even if it’s just an hour at the end of the day. The more you sail, the more you learn- and the more you sail! I’ve learned If you push yourself a little more each week, you feel better on the boat.”

Thank you to Alix for being a longtime CCSC sailor, we look forward to seeing where your Sunfish racing takes you!
