Caring for Your Mind, Building Your Future đź’š

As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, Potomac Job Corps is proud to stand with our students and staff in prioritizing mental wellness. Throughout May, we’ve created space for meaningful conversations, hosted wellness activities, and offered workshops that remind us all: your mental health matters.

Together, we’re building a community where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued—because caring for your mind is just as important as shaping your future.

Let’s keep the conversation going and continue lifting each other up. 💚

🌟 From Determination to Achievement: Meet Gavin H.

Gavin joined the Jacksonville Workforce Development Program at Eckerd Connects in January of this year, bringing with him a drive to create a better future and the determination to follow through. What followed was a powerful journey marked by focus, resilience, and remarkable progress.

In just over a month, Gavin turned that commitment into results—earning his high school diploma on March 3 with an impressive 3.73 GPA and receiving the Academic Excellence Award. 🎓
But he didn’t stop there. Focused on what’s next, Gavin took immediate steps toward his future by meeting with a U.S. Army recruiter. Today, he’s been accepted into the Army and is preparing for basic training after graduating from our program on June 5.

Gavin’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, proving that with determination and the right support, transformation is not just possible—it’s inevitable.

💼 At Eckerd Connects, we don’t just help individuals reach milestones—we help launch futures.

Celebrating Excellence in Education

Eckerd Connects’ NC Residential Academies proudly recognizes two educators honored this week by the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice at their Facilities and Programs Conference. Jim Abner received the DJJ Shining Star Award, and Whitney Hack was named a finalist for DJJ Teacher of the Year.

As the schools’ data manager and educational support professional, Jim plays a vital role in student success—working with districts statewide to ensure accurate records, credits, and services. Known for his reliability and teamwork, he also supports school initiatives and collaborates with teachers to provide students with encouragement and support.

Whitney, an English and Exceptional Children’s teacher, is recognized for her commitment to helping students build confidence and achieve their goals. She creates an inclusive, supportive classroom environment and goes beyond the classroom—securing grants, coordinating mentorship, and expanding career exploration opportunities.

Together, Jim and Whitney exemplify the dedication and impact that define Eckerd Connects’ NC Residential Academies.

🔧 Hands-on. Real-world. Career-ready.

At Potomac Job Corps, training goes beyond the classroom. Our students gain real experience by working together across trades—Cement, Plumbing, and Building Construction Technology (BCT)—to complete meaningful projects from start to finish.

This hands-on approach builds more than skills. It builds confidence, teamwork, and the ability to step onto a job site ready to get to work.

💪 At Potomac, we’re not just learning trades—we’re building futures.

🎳 Strikes, Smiles & Social Skills at Roy Allen Elementary

What an incredible night at the Roy Allen Family Bowling Event! A huge shout out to our amazing Eckerd Connects Prevention Specialist, Ms. Nicole, at Roy Allen Elementary School in Melbourne, for organizing such a fun and meaningful evening for the students and families we serve.

Throughout the night, students practiced real world social skills—showing good sportsmanship, cheering each other on, giving high fives, and learning how to celebrate both wins and losses with positivity and confidence. Watching them support one another, build friendships, and grow—all while having fun—was truly inspiring.

Each student went home with a special gift bag filled with resources, fidget toys, and Eckerd swag. Families also enjoyed a raffle featuring family social skills games, a mini bowling set, and even family tickets to the Brevard Zoo! One student also earned a Publix gift card for completing a social skills challenge designed for families to enjoy together.

It was a night full of laughter, learning, and community—and we’re grateful to everyone who helped make it so special.
