Sometimes, all it takes is a few minutes of your day to give someone something to look forward to.

Mary's love for volunteering started when she was just a kid, tagging along with her aunt on Meals on Wheels deliveries in Pennsylvania. She remembers how much she enjoyed meeting the seniors along their route, and she always knew that when she retired, she wanted to do the same.

Years later, Mary is creating those same memories with older adults across Pinellas County. Every week, she looks forward to the conversations, shared jokes and friendships she's built along her route. And for some homebound seniors, those few minutes together may be one of the only opportunities they have to enjoy a friendly conversation that day.

If you've been thinking about volunteering, Meals on Wheels is a great place to start! A small part of your week can have a meaningful impact on someone's day. Depression is not a normal part of aging, yet its warning signs can sometimes be overlooked or mistaken for age-related changes.

As our senior population continues to grow, recognizing and addressing mental health concerns among older adults becomes increasingly important. This National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, we're encouraging families, caregivers, and community members to pay attention to changes in the emotional well-being of the older adults around them.

At Neighborly, we recognize how important social connection is to healthy aging. Through programs like our Senior Cafés, Adult Day Centers, Transportation, and Meals on Wheels, we help older adults stay connected to their communities, build meaningful relationships, and experience moments of companionship.

For many older adults in Pinellas County, getting a nutritious meal isn't always as simple as going to the grocery store or cooking at home.

Some seniors face difficult choices between buying food, paying bills and affording medications. Others struggle with mobility, chronic health conditions or limited access to transportation. These challenges can put their health and independence at risk.

The need for senior nutrition services continues to grow. With approximately 500 older adults waiting for Meals on Wheels, there are still many neighbors who need our support.

And sometimes, even a small contribution can go a long way. Just $60 can help provide 30 lunches or feed one senior for an entire month.

That’s something Cheryl sees every day working with seniors in Pinellas County. It’s also why having services and resources available as people age matters so much.

Our senior population is growing, and the need for support is growing with it. We want Pinellas County to be a community where older adults have somewhere to turn when their needs change. Because aging affects all of us. And how we support our seniors today helps shape the community we’ll grow older in tomorrow.

Sometimes, one knock on the door can change a senior’s entire day.

Because when a Meals on Wheels volunteer arrives, they’re not only bringing a nutritious meal. They’re bringing a familiar face, a conversation and a reminder that someone in their community cares about them.

Kylie and Allison see that every Wednesday on their regular route. One of the homebound seniors they visit is blind and lives alone. He may not be able to see their faces, but he’s gotten to know them by their voices and looks forward to talking with them each week. Sometimes, we don’t realize that a conversation like this may be one of the only social interactions an older adult has that day, or even that week.

They originally started volunteering through medical school, but even after completing their required hours, they chose to stay after seeing the impact they could have in just a few hours each week. Thank you, Kylie and Allison, for continuing to show up and bring a smile to so many seniors!

At our North Greenwood Senior Café, seniors have been participating in Bingocize® with the Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas, Inc. The program combines bingo with gentle exercise, health education, and fall prevention to help older adults stay active, connected, and engaged.

During Healthy Aging Month, we want to highlight how opportunities like these can support senior wellness, social connection, and healthy aging right here in Pinellas County.

If you have an older loved one who could benefit from getting out of the house, meeting new people, and staying active, Neighborly Senior Cafés offer adults 60+ a place to enjoy lunch, activities, and time with others in their community.
