Community Dental Clinic

Community Dental Clinic For any questions call 727-216-6155. The Committee then decided to establish a 501(c)3 organization called Community Dental Clinic, Inc.

We are an independent nonprofit with a mission to provide compassionate, comprehensive dental services, education and access to dental care for the uninsured, low-income adults of Pinellas County. In 2011, a Dental Action Committee, comprised of representatives from the Salvation Army, UPARC and Clearwater Free Clinic, met numerous times to address the critical need for access to dental care for l

ow-income and developmentally disabled Pinellas County residents. With volunteers and strong community partnerships, the mission of the Community Dental Clinic, Inc. is to provide access to urgent dental healthcare and education to very low income families struggling to live at 200% and below the Federal Poverty Level and the developmentally disabled, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender and disability. The urgent need for low-income dental services was substantiated in April 2009, when the Salvation Army in Clearwater, FL received the results from a “Needs Assessment Survey” that they had contracted through the University of Tampa, Tampa, FL. This survey cost the Army $30,000 to identify the top five social service needs in our area and it was not surprising to learn that dental health is the number healthcare need in our community; and it is growing exponentially. It is well known to those of us associated with social services facilities and programs that there are no significant community dental programs and only a handful of extremely limited local and government programs available to the poor and the working poor. In addition, none of these programs serve the developmentally disabled. Facts:
More than 300,000 individuals live below 200% of the Federal poverty level in Pinellas County and of this group, and 1 in 3 does not have access to dental care. The rate of poverty in Florida now exceeds 19%
In the last year, the United States has seen the largest jump in poverty since 1959 and the working poor are the fastest growing segment of population in the U.S today

In addition, we serve the developmentally disabled in our community who have no access to dental healthcare at all because of their disabilities. Research shows that oral health is now the number one prevalent unmet health care need of the disabled. According to Pinellas County Health & Human Services, 1 out of 10 emergency room visits are due to avoidable emergency dental issues and in the state of Florida, these avoidable dental health needs are the #3 reason for emergency room visits ( #1 is flu/colds, #2 is headaches). In addition, there research has documented a very strong association between oral and physical health. This is especially problematic for the low income population who often find securing their health care needs sometimes impossible. People who have poor dental health and do not have access to dental care are at a much “higher risk” for the following health problems:
Heart disease and Stroke
Uncontrolled Diabetes
Increased risk for delivering pre-term and/or low birth weight babies
Increased risk of respiratory diseases and bacterial pneumonia
Increased bacterial infections due to poor dental hygiene, especially those with bleeding gums who are prey to more than 700 different types of oral bacteria
Research now shows that poor dental health can contribute to the progression of Alzheimer's disease

"Without Community Dental Clinic, I would have gone without dental care. Everyone is top notch. I was treated with respect and dignity. Thanks to everyone involved. I am forever grateful! I'm no longer in pain, I can eat comfortably, I feel more confident about my smile, and I feel valued and respected. " ~Troy

When Troy came to Community Dental Clinic, he was in pain and facing a dental emergency. Over 15 months, our volunteer dental team provided the comprehensive care he needed to restore his oral health and confidence.

Troy's care totaled more than $14,500 in donated services across 13 appointments—care that would have otherwise been out of reach.

This is why Community Dental Clinic exists! Thanks to our donors, volunteers, staff, and community partners, lives are changed every day through access to compassionate dental care.

Thank you for investing in patients like Troy.

Community Dental Clinic was honored to be invited to host a table during The Florida Orchestra performance and connect with so many wonderful members of our community.

Jessica put her dental expertise to work answering oral health questions and providing guidance to community members, while Jenn shared the mission of Community Dental Clinic and the life-changing impact our services have on local adults in need of dental care.

It was a gorgeous night filled with great conversations, meaningful connections, and wonderful community partners. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello. We are grateful for opportunities like these to share our mission and serve our community beyond the clinic walls!

Why Our Mission Matters:
"When I first came to the Community Dental Clinic, I was experiencing unbearable, excruciating pain in two of my molars. After undergoing assessments and X-rays, I learned that there were even more concerns that needed to be addressed. I needed two root canal treatments and fillings on almost all areas of my teeth. I was not only in severe pain, but also feeling overwhelmed and uncertain about how I would ever get the treatment I needed.
From the very beginning, the Community Dental Clinic met me with genuine care. They made treatment accessible to me, removing financial barriers and opening doors I didn’t know I could walk through. They made me feel seen, valued, and accepted.
Through the leadership of Dr. Daniel Salvatore, a man of compassion with a true heart for the community, my dental condition was carefully assessed and I was provided with the treatment plan and care I truly deserved. I was able to receive two root canal procedures, crowns, fillings, and cleanings. The staff are amazing—loving toward their patients and generous with their time and skills. They also guided me on how to better care for my teeth and even provided dental kits, which was incredibly generous.
Because of the Community Dental Clinic, I am now eating comfortably and able to fully enjoy food and drinks again. I’ve been told many times that I have a contagious smile, and after their care, I feel like I’m never fully dressed without it.
The Community Dental Clinic gave me back my smile, my confidence, and my peace of mind. I truly believe I would have continued to suffer in pain for years without them. Today, I am at my best—physically and emotionally—and I am blessed and immensely grateful." Clarke
