Dear Neighbors,
We would like to bring attention to the dangers associated with the use of rat poison within our community. Recently, a large barred owl was found deceased in one of our backyards, and just two weeks earlier, a mother raccoon was also found dead. Neither animal appeared to have suffered any physical trauma, raising concerns about possible secondary poisoning.
Rat poison does not only affect rodents. Owls, hawks, raccoons, pets, and other wildlife can become seriously ill or die after consuming poisoned rodents. Birds of prey such as barred owls play an important role in naturally controlling rodent populations, and unintended poisoning can disrupt the balance of our local ecosystem.
We respectfully ask residents to consider safer and more environmentally responsible alternatives for rodent control, including:
Sealing openings and entry points around homes
Securing garbage and pet food
Removing outdoor food and water sources
Using humane traps in enclosed, protected areas
Hiring pest control companies that use wildlife-safe methods
The Florida Fish and Wildlife department has been contacted.
Please report any finding to them or email the HOA with details to report.
By working together, we can help manage rodent issues while also protecting the wildlife and pets that share our neighborhood.
Thank you for your consideration and cooperation in keeping our community safe for all living creatures.
Sincerely,
Northwood West HOA
