****Circle of Heroes Statue Clean-up Postponed****

Thank you everyone for your interest and help with our upcoming dive trip for cleaning the growth off of the Circle of Heroes memorial on Veteran's Reef. Unfortunately we are postponing this dive. It has been reported that there is only ONE mooring buoy current on the reef. We will get out as soon as possible to replace the three that have come loose.
Secondly, the wind has been blowing quite a bit this week and the conditions Saturday do not look as favorable as we would like them to be for everyone to enjoy this dive!
Stay tuned for updates as to when we have replaced the mooring buoys and when the next clean-up dive is scheduled.

The fine folks at the St. Pete Underwater Club have done it again!
After another successful The St. Pete Open spearfishing tournament, the SPUCs teamed up with Wild Seafood Co. and donated the proceeds of the Lionfish collected at the tournament to Reef Monitoring.
Most of you divers out there have probably visited the Circle of Heroes Memorial on Veteran's Reef. Since deployment, we have had issues with mooring buoys going missing. Some appear to have been cut/stolen. We are looking into this with the proper authorities. We cannot imagine who would continue to deface this incredible memorial.
In the meantime, we are re-deploying new buoys on the reef that will be moored with ALL CHAIN and welded shackles. We cannot afford to have boats trying to anchor on the reef and risk damaging the statues.
SPUC and Wild's donation is going towards new buoys and chain that will hopefully keep the Circle of Heroes in tact for years to come!
Reef Monitoring couldn't do what we do without the generosity of the public and having these partnerships with industry businesses like Wild Seafood and stewards of the environment like the SPUCs is crucial. Both are great people that give a ton back to the community.
Our deepest thanks goes out to all the members of SPUC and to Jason and Vicky at Wild Seafood.

On Saturday Aug 17th, Reef Monitoring was invited back by the St. Pete Underwater Club to process Lionfish at The St. Pete Open spearfishing tournament. The SPUC's are great stewards of the environment and encourage their members and guests to remove as many lionfish as possible. We typically keep the lionfish for research and education purposes.
This year, we donated the lionfish to the Jacobson Culinary Arts Academy at Tarpon Springs High School. We were invited to come teach the student chefs about lionfish. Normally we love to talk about the science of lionfish but this was all things culinary! The students learned about the supply chain of the fish from Gulf to table, how to market the sustainable invasive species, proper handling technique as well as how to prepare and serve them.
The students were eager to learn and we had an absolutely wonderful time.
Special thanks to Pat Bennett and Daniel Skelton for including us.

And thank you to the Jacobson Culinary Jcaachefs Boosters and Tarpon Springs High School for allowing us to be a part of it. There are going to be some great chefs coming out of this program!

Reef Monitoring is headed out today to perform our visual fish surveys and deploy our Light Traps! These collection devices tell us what the larval recruitment is to our natural and artificial reefs out of the water column. This helps us determine what NEW biomass is settling on a reef vs fish just swimming over from a near-by reef.

We also continue to take water samples for Red Tide analysis.

Water is warming up and the diving has been great!

Reef Monitoring is heading out in the fog to go do some fish counts and collect Light Trap samples.

A little eerie for sure...
