One huge takeaway from the meeting tonight on the new "sports complex" proposal is that the City of Clearwater has only 10% Green Space as compared to 14-15% national average. We are already below the national average, and we will LOSE over 77+ acres of green space if this sports complex is approved.
City council is proposing to pave over one of the few remaining green spaces (parks and rec land) and put AstroTurf and a Parking Lot and a Soccer Stadium. We already have multiple soccer and sports facilities throughout the city. Why take more green space, our remaining 77 acres of land?
This green space, "the landings" as it is locally known, should be preserved as green space which then can be used as
1. environmental credits for other areas of economic development within the city of clearwater like credits for hospital development.
2. a natural habitat for wildlife that is already there (owls, coyotes, eagles, turtles)
3. preserve this watershed as the runoff from this grassy area feeds almost all the local creeks throughout Clearwater
4. This proposal is contrary to GreenPrint which is the city environmental plan which is required by State Law.
We are literally running out of environmental credits and green space in this city.
Speak up, write your city council members INDIVIDUALLY. Here is the link to their email addresses. We are losing unpaved land in our city and it will be a disaster if we don't preserve our natural resources. Make your voice heard TODAY!
