Years ago, a doctor told Eleanor Pendergraft her multiple sclerosis was getting worse and would never get better. She decided he was wrong.

This piece from NewsChannel 5+ highlights Eleanor and other amazing athletes competing in the Tennessee Senior Olympics 1-Mile Power Walk competition earlier this summer. From first-time athletes to reigning champs, it captures the spirit of the Senior Games and reminds us how exciting it is that "You can get older and still get better, what a great thing!"

90-years-old. Living with multiple sclerosis. A competitor in the Tennessee Senior Olympics. Eleanor Pendergraft really is someone grand. For everyone at the event, there was a deep appreciation for being able to compete.

Kam Yee showed up for his first Maryland Senior Olympics six years ago feeling like a kid on the first day of school.

He soon found that the atmosphere was supportive, not intimidating. Every year, the competition leaves him feeling inspired and encouraged, not compared, and excited by the energy of the people around him.

“The Maryland Senior Olympics hold a special place in my athletic journey because they offer something I don’t find in most other events: a true celebration of longevity, community and purpose in sport.”

At the Maryland Track & Field meet this year, Kam notched two new PRs, won seven medals and secured his qualification for the 2027 National Senior Games presented by Humana.

It’ll be his fourth time at Nationals, and he’s fired up to see how fast he can go in Tulsa. But more importantly, he wants to “keep growing into the athlete and the person I’ve become through this journey.”

Kari Torkelson's love of basketball shooting began decades ago. In elementary school, she won her school's basketball shooting contest, then went on to beat every other school in the district. "I didn't have a basketball hoop at my house, and after I won, Dad said it was time to put one up."

That backyard hoop helped launch a lifelong love of the game. Kari later played basketball at the University of Minnesota Crookston, where she was a member of the 1989–90 women's basketball team, now inducted into the school's Hall of Fame.

After years away from competitive sports, Kari returned to the court last summer to compete in the Basketball Shooting Skills event at the 2025 National Senior Games presented by Humana. Her magic touch was still there; Kari made 24 of 25 shots to win a gold medal!

And just like when she was a kid, the first person she wanted to tell was her dad. "I got in the car and called my dad, and I think he kind of knew," she recalls. "I said, 'I just won a gold medal,' and he started to chuckle, maybe tearing up a little, and said, 'Oh, that's fantastic!'"
