Did you know? A large problem facing Sitka black-tailed deer habitat in parts of Southeast Alaska is that historic timber harvests have re-grown into second-growth forests with tree canopies so closed in that the understory plants deer need for food and cover can’t grow anymore.
Current conditions point to a timely opportunity for scaling up deer habitat restoration in Southeast Alaska. And thanks to the Blacktail Deer Foundations’ Restoration Mapping Framework report, we have identifed 80,000 acres of high priority areas where treatment will have great benefit to Sitka black-tailed deer.

Happy National Trails Day! Trails take us into the heart of our public lands where we hike, scout, hunt, or just enjoy sharing these landscapes with our nation's wildlife. By conserving mule deer habitat both on and off trail, The Mule Deer Foundation promotes more access to the beauty, bounty, and inspiration these lands provide. We're proud to partner with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management on these efforts. Take the time to enjoy a trail on your public lands today!
