One Year Ago Today – The Red Bridge Fire

On June 9, we were reminded just how quickly wildfire can impact our community. The Red Bridge Fire challenged firefighters, residents, and partner agencies, bringing everyone together with a shared goal of protecting lives and property.

As wildfire season begins again, let this anniversary serve as a reminder to stay prepared, follow County burn regulations, create a defensible space around your home, and have an evacuation plan. One of the best ways to stay informed during emergencies is to sign up for emergency alerts through Kittitas County Everbridge Alerts.

🌊 Swiftwater Awareness Training 🚒

This week, KCFD7 firefighters are focused on our annual Swiftwater Awareness training, reviewing river hazards, rescue considerations, and equipment familiarization in preparation for the busy summer recreation season.

The training included:
🛟 Shore-based rescue operations
🛟 Personal protective equipment (PPE) capabilities and limitations
🛟 Throw bag deployment and victim rescue techniques
🛟 Access and scene management considerations
🛟 Coordination and response expectations with our partner agencies

Swiftwater incidents are inherently dangerous, and the safest rescue is often one performed from shore. Through ongoing training, our firefighters gain the knowledge and skills needed to recognize hazards, operate safely, and provide effective assistance during water emergencies.

As rivers and streams continue to attract anglers, floaters, and other outdoor enthusiasts, remember that cold, fast-moving water can be dangerous even on warm days. Wear a life jacket, know your limits, and always recreate responsibly.

🔥 Fire Danger is HIGH 🔥

While we are not currently under a burn ban, conditions across Upper Kittitas County are becoming increasingly dry. Grasses and light fuels can ignite easily and fires can spread quickly, especially during windy conditions.

As you enjoy the outdoors, please do your part to prevent wildfires:

✅ Fully extinguish fires before leaving them unattended
✅ Never park vehicles on dry grass
✅ Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks
✅ Use caution with equipment that can create heat or sparks
✅ Properly dispose of ci******es and smoking materials
✅ Keep a shovel and water source nearby when conducting any legal burning

Remember, it only takes one spark to start a wildfire.

KCFD7 crews are ready to respond, but prevention is our best tool. Let’s all do our part to keep our community, forests, and neighbors safe this summer.

🚒 Stay informed, stay prepared, and help Prevent Wildfires.
