Small Scale Watercolors - Exploring Techniques
November 18 - December 16, 2026 (Skip November 25)
Wednesdays, 4 weeks, 1-3:30PM
Instructor: Andrea Tharian

One of the barriers to starting watercolor can be the simple question “where do I start?” In this four week course, instructor Andrea Tharian will break down that looming question into mini lessons each week. Students will begin by exploring the properties of color and color mixing, then delve into techniques such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and incorporating household items like salt and rubbing alcohol into their compositions. After gaining some confidence with the medium, students will spend the last couple weeks creating miniature compositions of their choice to be framed. Students will leave the course with a framed 4”x 4” and 5”x 7” watercolor painting just in time for the holidays.

Introduction to Landscape Painting in Watercolor
November 18 - December 16, 2026 (Skip November 25)
Wednesdays, 4 weeks, 10 AM - 12:30 PM
Instructor: Andrea Tharian

Over four weeks, students will learn how to crop photos for stronger compositions, along with basic watercolor techniques for painting landscapes and foliage. We will talk about atmospheric perspective, a painting technique where objects in the distance are often described in less detail and contrast than objects in the foreground. This class is designed for beginners in watercolor and/or landscape painting. Landscape reference photos will be provided but students are encouraged to work from their own photographs as well.

The next Donuts, Coffee, and Printmaking is coming up next week!

On October 17 (The 3rd Sat. of September) from 9:30-10:30am, Ruth Kolker will do a demonstration on mono printing and relief printing using mixed media, as well as talk about the process of overprinting. Ruth is an abstract painter and printmaker, who has taught at a variety of local schools. Her work focuses on fantasy landscapes, color and texture, her process is very improvisational. In this session, Ruth will explain the process of building up a plate. Her work utilizes recycled materials to give them a second life. Attendees will get a look at a variety of prints made using different applications of unique materials, and see the many paths a print can take.

Learn about fungi during this 2-day workshop, covering everything mushroom! Students will produce a botanical plate style artwork, depicting different mushroom views and learning about their anatomical structure. Drawing techniques, composition, and watercolor will be covered during this workshop. If you have a preferred mushroom subject, you are welcome to focus on that in class, otherwise the instructor will provide mushroom reference materials. Level: Intermediate to Advanced⁠

Place and Memory invites viewers to reflect on the spaces that shaped them, the homes left behind, the streets renamed, and the landscapes altered, and to consider how memory functions as both preservation and transformation. In the tension between fragility and endurance, the exhibition suggests that place lives not only in geography but also in the shifting architecture of remembrance.

Juror: Chris Wubbena
Chris Wubbena holds an MFA in Art with a Sculpture Emphasis from San Francisco State University and a BFA in Art with a Sculpture Emphasis and a Creative Writing Minor from the University of Northern Iowa. He is currently a tenured Full Professor of Sculpture at Southeast Missouri State University.

Layered Image & Surface is a beginner-to-intermediate mixed media workshop exploring image transfer, collage, drawing, texture-building, layering, abrasion, and cold wax processes. Through demonstrations and guided studio exercises, participants will experiment with a range of contemporary mixed media techniques while creating richly layered surfaces. Students will complete several exploratory studies and develop one larger finished artwork across the two sessions. Emphasis is placed on material exploration, composition, and discovering how layered processes can transform images and create depth, texture, and atmosphere.⁠
