Thanks to Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library for expanding access to local history with a new digital resource featuring The Clayton News (later The Clayton News-Star), a longtime community newspaper that once captured the heartbeat of the Town.

Here is an interesting photo and excerpt from an article from 1916 about the CHS State Baseball Championship. We even recognize more than one of the names!

Black History Month is a time to celebrate Clayton residents who have made an impact far beyond our community. This week, we highlight Donald “Clyde” Sinclair, lifelong Clayton native, Clayton High School graduate (class of 1977), and Harlem Globetrotter known as “The Glide.”

After playing college basketball at NC Central and professionally (both overseas and with the Washington Generals), Sinclair joined the Harlem Globetrotters in 1988, where he spent 17 years entertaining fans around the world. In 1998, he received the Mr. Globetrotter Award, honoring the player who best represents the spirit of the organization.

In 2005, Sinclair hung up his jersey and took on a new role as coach for the Globetrotters where he served for seven years.

In July of 2022, the Town of Clayton renamed All-Star Park on Front Street to Donald “Clyde” Sinclair Park in recognition of his legacy. As Sinclair shared during the unveiling, his hope is that the park reminds the community of the importance of family, mentorship, and giving back. At the beginning of this year (2026), the Town hosted a ribbon cutting for the brand-new playground at this park.

“It’s not about me...” said Sinclair during the unveiling of the new park name. “It’s about making this community a better place every day.”
