SNEC President Dan Ross is representing our chapter at the ACBS International Show in Clayton, NY. He was selected as a judge of the contemporary class of boats this year.

As always, there are some absolutely beautiful antique and classic (and contemporary!) wooden boats on display.

Last month we held our spring open house and shop tour at North Country Boatworks in Milford, CT. These events are always a great time to reconnect with other members after a long winter, share fun boating memories, make plans for the upcoming boating season with one another, enjoy a catered lunch, and have fun looking at some fine wooden boats together. We had an exceptional turnout with over 30 attendees!

Many thanks to the board members and chapter volunteers who helped organize this event. We're looking forward to the next shop tour but first, let's get those boats in the water and kick off summer 2024!!

We were contacted by a local gentleman who was hoping we could spread the word about his unique wooden boat with an interesting history.

Connecticut River ‘Pocket Cruiser’ Three Sisters is a one-of-a kind raised-deck ‘pocket cruiser’, said to have been built in 1920 in Glastonbury. Most of her life, she’s cruised the lower Connecticut River, admired by many for her unique charm and character. At the 1996 ACBS Boat Show in Essex she won the “People’s Choice” award.

At 25’ LOA, with a plumb stem and a broad transom, an open deck aft, and covered helm station, Three Sisters easily accommodates six for day-cruises. Her stand-up “trunk cabin”, complete with galley, head, and berths for two, is perfect for overnight-excursions. Construction is white cedar carvel planking over steamed oak frames. Power is a 40-hp Gray Marine engine. Three Sisters needs work -- mostly cosmetic, some structural -- more than the present owner, now 80, can do.

From the owner: "...digging through old records and notes, I have been able to reconstruct ownership of the boat back as far as the 1950’s...my understanding is that she was built long before the 1950’s. I’m told that the builder lived in Glastonbury and laid her keel in 1916, then enlisted in the war effort, served in France and, upon returning, finished her construction in 1920..."

It’s time to pass Three Sisters on to new owners who’ll enjoy and care for this sweet little cruiser.

Our spring Shop Tour and Get Together has been planned for Saturday May 18, beginning at 10am. This year we will meet at North Country Boatworks, located in Milford, CT. On display will be, among other boat projects, a 1939 Chris Craft Deluxe Utility full restoration in the process of building varnish coats after staining. Also on display, a 1930 Peterborough Canoe full restoration. Mike Sorensen will be bringing his Chrysler Hemi rebuild, and will discuss the diversity and history of these engines.

Coffee and lunch will be catered, compliments of the chapter. Lunch will be served around 1pm: sandwiches, chips, cookies and beverages from Nardelli's.

We hope to see you there. Please RSVP as soon as possible, (no later than Wednesday 5/1) by sending us a message here or calling Bette! (203) 264 5823

Last Saturday some of our chapter members enjoyed a fun and HOT day on the water. We launched several boats in Essex CT, then took a nice ride upstream and enjoyed the sights of the lower Connecticut River. Later on we all met back at the Connecticut River Museum for some pizza and lots of catching up.

Thanks to the good folks at for hosting our chapter, we're looking forward to returning next summer. And thanks to our members who came out with their boats, volunteered their time to help launch and haul out, provided the pizza and drinks, and braved the heat.

A reminder: SNEC will be displaying some wooden boats at the Norwalk Boat Show next week. Come by and see us!

Gail and Wes Van Dine's 1950 Greavette Disappearing Propeller Boat “Bounty”

The disappearing propeller was invented in 1915 and manufactured into boats up until the year 1958. The engine itself is very small, pushing the boat about 6 mph at top speed. One of the benefits to owning a Dippy, besides the slow and relaxing ride, is that the propeller can pull up into the interior housing, allowing the boat to go in very shallow waters that would normally only be fit for a canoe.

The Van Dine’s found Bounty in the free boat section of Wooden Boat magazine in 2009. They drove up to Canada to pick her up and found the boat was stored upside down on a woodpile. She was brought back to Connecticut and restored. Wes’s favorite part about Bounty is that she is a very unique and unusual boat that often strikes up quite a few questions.
