Thousand Islands Land Trust

Thousand Islands Land Trust This includes 10 Signature Preserves and 21 miles of trails that are open to the public, year-round.

The Thousand Islands Land Trust’s mission is working to conserve the natural beauty, diverse wildlife habitats, water quality, and outdoor recreation opportunities of the Thousand Islands region. Since 1985, the Thousand Islands Land Trust (TILT) has helped safeguard the regional landscape of the 1000 Islands by accepting conservation easements, acquiring property and by establishing accessible ar

eas available for public enjoyment. Currently, TILT protects over 12,000 acres of land, both fee-owned land and conservation easements, including important wetland, grassland and woodland habitat. The lands conserved may be:

· habitat for threatened or endangered species
· filters for clean water in watershed are
as
· important historic sites
· scenic areas that define the character of the region
· recreational lands that benefit the community

During the year, we host our annual TILTreks, KidsTreks and TILTKids Day Camp programs, which promote living, learning and conserving in the 1000 Islands. TILT is organized and operated exclusively for exempt purposes set forth in section 501(c)(3), and none of its earnings may inure to any private shareholder or individual. Most recent financial information is available at www.Guidestar.org. TILT was awarded National Accreditation by the Land Trust Alliance Accreditation Commission in 2009, and was awarded Reaccreditation in 2014 and 2019. This designation indicates that TILT meets national standards for protecting important natural places forever.

🌿Learning came to life during TILT's Conservation Connections program!

📚Students from Guardino Elementary School in Clayton participated in a two-day experience exploring the habitats, plants, and wildlife of the St. Lawrence River region.

🌳 On Day 1, students learned about grassland, wetland, and forest habitats through hands-on classroom activities.

☀️ On Day 2, they headed to the S. Gerald Ingerson Preserve to explore local species and learn how simple tools like boot brushes can help prevent the spread of invasive species.

Programs like Conservation Connections help inspire the next generation of environmental stewards by connecting students with the natural world around them. 💚

🎉Last week, we were honored to celebrate the grand opening of the Edward & Marlene Schmeer Signature Preserve in Cape Vincent!

💚What began as a family’s love for this land has become a lasting conservation legacy that will benefit wildlife, water quality, and future generations for years to come.

🌿Guests enjoyed remarks from TILT staff and the Schmeer family, learned about the property's history and ecological importance, and joined us for the official ribbon cutting before exploring the new trail, interpretive signage, and observation tower overlooking Wilson Bay, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River.

🌳The Edward & Marlene Schmeer Preserve is now open to the public, and we invite you to come experience this incredible landscape for yourself.

📚 Learning comes to life outdoors! 🌎

🍃Sackets Harbor second graders recently participated TILT's Conservation Connections Program, which combines classroom learning with hands-on exploration in nature.

🔍On day one, students learned about weathering and erosion in the classroom. The next day, they headed to the Rivergate Trail, where they explored the landscape, identified native and invasive plants, searched for wildlife, and observed real-world examples of erosion.

💚Experiences like Conservation Connections help spark curiosity, build connections to the natural world, and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.

🌱 A look at the transformation taking place at TILT's Baxter Property!

Recently, TILT partnered with The Nature Conservancy and Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District to plant 5,000 native trees across 10 acres at our Baxter Property in Hammond, NY.

These photos showcase the property's journey—from fall 2025 before clearing began, to the site after preparation work was completed, and finally to what it looks like today following the tree planting. The new forest includes species such as Red Oak, White Pine, and Red Maple, which will provide valuable habitat for wildlife while helping to capture carbon, stabilize soils, and improve water quality.

We're excited to watch this restoration project take root and grow for years to come! 🌳💚
