in 1775, riflemen from West Augusta County, Va., began their journey to Boston during the early days of the American Revolution. A journal entry dated July 14 recounts their travels through the Monongahela River region and a stop at Redstone Fort – located in present-day Fayette County – where the writer listed the “best riflemen” to send to fight in Boston.

The entry offers a raw glimpse into the uncertainty and urgency of the time, complete with rumors of heavy fighting, accusations of spying, and patriotic cries like “Confusion to the Scoundrels.”
