Why this matters: Brownfield redevelopment can bring real benefits to our communities, but it should not happen without meaningful public input. This ordinance would create earlier notice, more opportunities for residents to be involved, and clearer information about proposed projects.

Thank you to the Knollwood residents who showed up Thursday to share concerns, ideas, and priorities for the neighborhood.

Special thanks to for catering dinner, and to Rep. Larry Lambert and Councilman John Cartier for joining the conversation and hearing directly from residents.

Residents talked about aging sewers, construction and dust from the former Claymont Steel site, neighborhood safety, lost trees and habitat, and the continued push for radiological testing at the Honeywell site.

We’re grateful to everyone who came out and helped shape what comes next.

“Communities near data center projects deserve a real say before decisions are made,” said Roby Anstett, executive director of the Claymont Coalition for Environmental Justice, in an email.

“We’re already hearing concerns from residents about private wells and water quality. People should not be left with unanswered questions about pollution, noise, water or infrastructure costs while companies get the benefits.”

The legislation would prevent data centers from passing the costs of running data centers onto ratepayers.

Congrats LEEP graduates!

In everything we work on, workforce development, especially for our youth stays central.

There is no environmental justice without economic justice. That’s why we advocate for Claymont hands to work on Claymont projects. Hiring local is only a part of centering the people who are most impacted by any project and the engagement must start before the question of hiring comes up.

CC4EJ was proud to celebrate these individuals and honored to express that too them directly from the front.

On Monday, July 20, neighbors delivered our petition to EPA: test the old Allied Chemical site for radiation, show us the results, and clean up what's found.

EPA's answer: radiation is outside this cleanup, testing won't be required, and the question belongs to the Department of Energy.

Here's what the government's own records show. In seventy years, no one has ever tested this site for radiation. And the federal government has already paid more than $366,000 to two workers from this plant whose cancers were linked to radiation.

We don't accept that as the last word. We're taking the question to every agency with the power to answer it.

We promised to report back after the July 20 EPA meeting. EPA admits the site is still too polluted to live on — but says radiation testing isn't its job. Here's what we heard, and what happens next.
