On November 29, 2023 it was a delightful evening at Lombardy Hall, the country home of Gunning Bedford, Jr. as the Delaware Colonials visited Granite-Corinthian Lodge No. 34 to confer the Master Mason degree on a worthy Brother.

The degree was ably led by WB John A Turansky in the East. WB Hon. Jim Horn delivered the lecture in outstanding form.

The whole team did an amazing job. I was honored to take part in a small role myself.

One can only imagine that Bedford often had the leading gentlemen of the state and freemasonry visit his house.

He had purchased the property in 1782 but didn’t fully move in until 1793 after the building was considerably enlarged to meet his needs. He had purchased the estate from Hannah Robinson the widow of Charles Robinson, they were my 6th great grandparents.

The property had come down to Charles Robinson from his Great Grandfather Valentine Hollingsworth who was given 986 acres along Shellpot Creek in Brandywine Hundred by his friend William Penn.

Valentine Hollingsworth was my 9th Great Grandfather. He also gave the land that became Newark Union Church & Cemetery.

Gunning Bedford had served on George Washington’s staff during the American Revolution. He served as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and was the primary advocate that each state have two Senators to protect small states like Delaware.

After the convention Bedford led the effort to have Delaware become the First State by ratifying the Constitution on December 7, 1787.

Once Washington was in office as President he appointed Bedford as the first Federal Judge for the District of Delaware.

In 1806 when the Grand Lodge of Delaware was formed Bedford being the most prominent Mason in Delaware was elected the first Grand Master.
