Several years ago, I attended a training where one thing really made an impression: three-year-olds have only been on Earth for 1,095 days. Let that soak inβa little over 1,000 days! With the first three years being the most critical for brain development, that is not a long time for a little one to learn all the βrulesβ of life. However, Iβve heard adults say βyou should know betterβ so many times once kids start school. If children have been denied positive interactions or engagement, or have experienced trauma, then they more than likely have not learned appropriate social or emotional skills, which inhibits their ability to manage emotions or self-regulate appropriately. As adults, we could all do better at managing our own emotions when little ones might be feeling some big emotions, or just learning independence. Itβs okay to tell kids NOβjust be sure to follow up with why it is a NO so that they can learn from their mistakes and know there are boundaries. They actually donβt know better if theyβve never been taught!
ENGAGEMENT IS KEY!
