There was an amazing turnout yesterday for the 33rd Annual Milford Lake EcoMeet. The kids didn't let a little, ok a whole lot of rain, get in the way of a great time.

Brooke with K-State Extension-River Valley District and I had a very full room with each of the 4 groups taking the Invertebrates focus test. She was definitely the tech genius that kept us on track :)
* SHOUT OUT to Jase Kloft for placing 2nd in the Invertebrates test. They ended up having TWO tie breaker rounds to determine who won!

CCCMS and Wakefield each had 3 teams competing and CCCMS Team B took 2nd place over all!

Note to self... don't take the "fancy" personal truck when going out to look at a producer's pasture.
On a positive note, I was able to get the info I needed and made it out with no cow sized dents 😂

On a serious note:
We are thankful when landowners reach out to us for technical assistance. If we don't know the answer, we know someone that does. Please don't hesitate to get a hold of us for any help you may need, it's what we're here for!

We had a great time Saturday at Lucinda Stuenkel's Sunny Day Farms Tour. The networking at an event like this is really second to none. There is always so much to learn from other attendees.

I was really grateful for the opportunity to discuss targeted goat grazing and showcase my herd grazing a large patch of sericea lespedeza.

The weather was better than we could have ever hoped for and there was even a comment or two that a jacket would have been nice. To top it off, the much needed rain held off just long enough for the tour to wrap up and attendees to be on their way home.

The next Kansas Farmers Union International Year of the Woman Farmer tour is scheduled for Oct. 14th right down the road at Riley, KS. Check out their page for more info!

I've had a lot of conversations recently concerning the spread of Old World Bluestem. One of the comments I heard was "people just believe that grass is grass and don't know the difference".
The more I think about that the more I believe that to be an accurate observation. Those of us involved in conservation have an enormous amount of information at our fingertips to help discern "good" grass from "bad" grass but what about the average landowner?
Old World Bluestem is a HUGE threat to our grasslands. Once you know what you're looking for you will see it everywhere, in our road ditches and in our rangeland.
We have technical and financial assistance available for Clay County residents to help eradicate OWB from your property. Stop by or call the office for more information.
