Saving and investing in your future is a lot easier when you know what your housing costs will be next month. And the month after that.

Habitat’s home buying program gives families that certainty. And when the budget is stable, savings goals become real goals — not just wishes.

That's what we’re building together. Not just homes.

More Than a Gallery:
A Free Community Art Studio
ARTLife717 is not a traditional gallery that is open only for exhibitions and receptions. During our regular business hours, the space operates as a free, welcoming community art studio where anyone may come in, sit at a table, use the available art supplies, and create.
Our open studio welcomes people with and without lived experience of mental-health challenges. No diagnosis, referral, membership, or artistic experience is required. Visitors are simply expected to treat others respectfully and not enter or remain in the space while intoxicated.
Artwork is continuously displayed throughout the studio, allowing visitors to experience the work of local artists while also taking part in the creative process themselves. For scheduled art receptions, the tables and studio materials are cleared or rearranged so the space can function as a more formal gallery and gathering place.
ARTLife717 is open Thursday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Art supplies are provided free of charge.

📣 PRESS RELEASE: The Ackerman Foundation Navigates Sharp Increase in Applications -- 43 Community Non-Profits Receive $100,000 in Grants 🎉

Evidence of a more challenging economy characterized the 2026 awards of The Ackerman Foundation, where the number of applications grew by nearly 50% and the funds available to grant—pegged at the same level as last year—met less than 40% of requests.

As a result, only a handful of applications were funded at the full amount of their requests in the interest of helping as many non-profits as possible in their community improvement activities. Forty-three local organizations, including 16 new applicants, received an average amount of $2,325.

“It has been a challenging process,” said Foundation President Claire Ackerman. “We focused on the pressing needs people have for food, housing, and medical care, while not ignoring the arts and education. We also wanted to give special attention to the needs of children and overall citizen well-being. On the plus side, we have very strong confidence that this year’s grants are making important contributions to community resilience.”

To celebrate National Library Week, Roe Jan Library will host a free screening of the critically acclaimed 2025 documentary The Librarians, followed by a discussion with Library Director Tammy Gaskell. Join us on Sunday, April 19 at 1 PM. 🎥📚

In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.
