On Golden Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal sanctuary located on 105 acres in Northwest Oregon that provides food, shelter, medical care, love and compassion to large animals in need.

Learning to Listen Without Words 🫏💛

Some of the best conversations at OGR don’t involve words at all. Recently, our staff, volunteers, and some of their children participated in an educational seminar taught right here at On Golden Rescue, learning how horses, donkeys, and mules communicate through their ears, eyes, expressions, posture, and movement, with our residents serving as some pretty adorable teachers.

Our donkeys and mules were curious, gentle, and more than happy to soak up the extra attention. ❤️ It was especially sweet watching the kids begin to recognize all the little ways these animals tell us how they’re feeling. Donkeys and mules are incredibly intelligent, thoughtful, affectionate animals, and spending time with them reminds us just how much can be communicated when we slow down, pay attention, and connect. Sometimes the best teachers have four legs and very long ears. 🫏

Want to meet them for yourself? Join us for the On Golden Rescue Open House on Saturday, September 12, from 11 AM–3 PM! Come meet the animals, explore the sanctuary, and learn more about OGR. The Open House is FREE to attend - we do ask that you reserve your free spot ahead of time so we can plan for parking, hayrides and supplies. Make a day of it and grab a picnic lunch from the Blue House in Vernonia, who are generously donating 10% of their lunch profits to OGR that day.

Come spend the day with us at On Golden Rescue for our 2026 Open House on Saturday, September 12!

Wander the sanctuary, meet some of our 45+ residents, explore our 105 acres and see firsthand what your support makes possible. Whether you’ve followed OGR for years or have always wanted to see what life at the sanctuary is really like, this is the perfect excuse to come out and visit.

Meet our newest little helpers at On Golden Rescue: baby Barn Swallows. These tiny insect‑eaters devour thousands of flies and mosquitoes, keeping our barns comfortable for every resident. At OGR, we work with nature not against it. 🪶

Have you ever seen horses gently nibble each other and wondered what they were doing?

This sweet behavior is called mutual grooming, and it’s one of the most heartfelt ways horses show affection and strengthen their bond.

As you’ll see in this video, Sophie and Annie, two of OGR’s beloved miniature horses, take turns gently nibbling each other’s neck and shoulders. In the wild, this helps remove itchy spots they can’t reach on their own. But it’s also much more than that—it’s how horses say, “I trust you. I feel safe with you. You’re my friend.”

For Sophie and Annie, this simple act tells a beautiful story.

Both girls live with Equine Metabolic Syndrome, a lifelong condition that requires a carefully managed diet, soaked hay to reduce sugars, specialized supplements, medication, and regular exercise. Thanks to the incredible care they receive every day, they’re healthy, comfortable, and able to enjoy moments like this together.

Watching them reminds us that healing isn’t just about medicine. It’s about friendship. Safety. Love. And having someone by your side.

Every horse at On Golden Rescue deserves the chance to experience No More Bad Days—and because of compassionate supporters like you, they do.

Meet Tangie (29) and Tater (30)!!

These two have been best friends for years, and wherever one goes, the other isn't far behind. After spending so much of their lives together, the thought of separating them just didn't feel right.

When their family reached out to On Golden Rescue, they weren't looking to surrender horses they loved; they just needed a helping hand.

They had the pasture, the shelter, and the ability to care for Tangie and Tater every day, but as the horses got older, the cost of senior care kept adding up. Between veterinary exams, vaccinations, dental work, quality hay, senior feed, and supplements, it became more than they could manage on their own.

That's exactly why we created our Home Haven Program.

Home Haven gives senior and at-risk horses the chance to stay where they're happiest with the people who love them. Instead of asking families to say goodbye, we step in to help cover the specialized care these horses need while continuing to oversee their wellbeing. Because of Home Haven Tangie & Tater get to recieve vet care & nutrition they need all while staying together and remaining with the family they know and trust.

Sometimes rescue isn't about bringing an animal somewhere new. Sometimes it's about making sure they never have to leave home in the first place.

Every veterinary visit, dental float, vaccination, bale of hay, and senior supplement is possible because of supporters like you. Your generosity doesn't just help Tangie and Tater; it helps us give more senior horses the chance to grow old with the people who love them.

Thirteen equines at OGR just received essential dental care! For some, it was their first exam in years; for others, it was routine maintenance to keep them healthy and comfortable.
