At tonight's Troop meeting, Scouts learned how to set up and light an ultralight stove. It's not as easy as it sounds. Everyone was able to complete the task and we had a Scout complete his Star Board of Review and another complete his 2nd Class Scoutmaster conference. Troop 521F is busy these days!

Troop 521F and Pack 503 went canoeing today on the Caney Fork River. The 6-miles was challenging in places but otherwise just a fun float. The Green Hornet Patrol practiced using a throw rope to do water rescues. They learned how to hit their target and how to put the rope back in the bag for another throw. Believe it or not, the rain started just as we left the parking lot to come home. It was a fantastic day and we were very lucky, too!

Troop 521F just got back from a fantastic and very successful week of summer camp at the Pfeffer Scout Reservation in Kentucky. We're still counting the advancement requirements and merit badges that were earned. One Scout completed the Mile Swim. Even our adults were taking courses. Several of them completed the IOLS course and one added Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. Before going to camp, the entire Green Hornet Patrol completed their Scout rank and then took the Eagle Bound class at camp to help them advance even faster. Well done everyone! The next Court of Honor is going to be quite a celebration.

Open to all scouts in need of this instruction!
There will be a Totin' chip class, 7 May, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. The class will be at the Troop 514 Scout Hut, 1753 Madison St. It will be taught by Mr. Mac Torres.
Scouts should wear their Class A, bring a water bottle, and their own knife if they have one.

It was quite warm when we arrived at Pfeffer Reservation on Friday evening and set up our tents. Around 2 in the morning, I heard the rain pounding through the trees getting closer and closer and then it hit. The rain and wind continued through the night and in the distance I heard two loud crashes as limbs and maybe trees came down. The next morning, it was still raining and the temperature was dropping. As the day progressed, the wind chill hit 44 and we were looking at lower temperatures overnight. It was still raining, or at least drizzling at 4 in the afternoon. Safety first. We made the decision not to stay a second night and departed after dinner. The Scouts did wonderfully and one young Scout was in charge of preparing the meals while others assisted and staffed the serving line. Throw in a 5-mile hike and it was still a good campout and certainly one to remember.
