Scout Troop 521

Reposting at the request of the Anawaha Chapter leadership team:
Open to all scouts in need of this instruction!
There will be a Totin' chip class, 7 May, from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. The class will be at the Troop 514 Scout Hut, 1753 Madison St. It will be taught by Mr. Mac Torres.
Scouts should wear their Class A, bring a water bottle, and their own knife if they have one.

It was quite warm when we arrived at Pfeffer Reservation on Friday evening and set up our tents. Around 2 in the morning, I heard the rain pounding through the trees getting closer and closer and then it hit. The rain and wind continued through the night and in the distance I heard two loud crashes as limbs and maybe trees came down. The next morning, it was still raining and the temperature was dropping. As the day progressed, the wind chill hit 44 and we were looking at lower temperatures overnight. It was still raining, or at least drizzling at 4 in the afternoon. Safety first. We made the decision not to stay a second night and departed after dinner. The Scouts did wonderfully and one young Scout was in charge of preparing the meals while others assisted and staffed the serving line. Throw in a 5-mile hike and it was still a good campout and certainly one to remember.

Troop 521 had a great time hiking at Long Hunter State Park and having a cookout afterward with hot dogs and trail doughnuts cooked over a charcoal fire. Animal and plant identification requirements were met along with participation, and cooking over a fire. We had a great time and are planning to return to Long Hunter to camp and hike some of the longer trails.

Our Troop just added six new Scouts (an entire New Scout Patrol) and has been designated a Family unit. We are officially an F-Troop (for those of you old enough to remember the TV show). That means we welcome all genders to join us in adventures, learning to be self-sufficient, and learning to lead and be lead. We head out on our first outdoor adventure on Saturday!

Troop 521 spent the weekend camped out at Boxwell Reservation. It was a fantastic weekend, a little chilly on Friday night but Saturday was spectacular. Scouts worked on merit badges and rank requirements. All the Scouts earned advancement credits for camping and cooking. We ate very well, slept very well, and got a lot done. Way to go T521!

We had WEBELOS and AOLs visit with us at our last Troop meeting. What better way to have fun than to set fire to things. Of course, it was done safely in a fire barrel but fun nonetheless. Take a look at the photo and you can tell everyone had a great time.

Troop 521 had a fantastic day at Climb Nashville West today joined by Cub Scouts, WEBELOS, and family members. We climbed from around 2:30 until 5 and everyone went home tired. I think everyone enjoyed the opportunity to get out of the house and do something, too.

Tonight, our PLC held their Annual Planning Meeting and we have a day of climbing, hikes, and 4 campouts (two of which are merit badge weekends) planned just between now and the end of June. It's going to be a very good year.
