A very merry Christmas from our friends in Haiti!

Father Snell writes: "Let me share some good news with you about Christmas Celebrations.
- We had the Christmas Mass under the rain.
- With the support of a group of parishioners, and for another time, Parish gathered 50 poor children to give clothes, a food kit (rice, herring, milk, spaghetti...) After the Holy Family Mass, we gathered 150 children including the 50 poor to share meal, distribute gifts to children. They sang and they danced. These children were very happy. People liked the celebrations.”

Hello friends of St Jules in Haiti,

I recently received the following note from Father Snell, pastor of our twinned St Jules Parish in rural Petit Bourg du Borgne Haiti:

"Yesterday Sunday, the parishioners were summoned to fill the crevices around the retaining walls with embankments. I was particularly touched by this old lady (an old woman) who was carrying landfill. It was a vibrant testimony of love and belonging to the activities of the Parish. I am very happy with these types of testimonials; I feel encouraged and supported. I thank my God.

While we have been providing the funds for the materials and the skilled labor to repair the Church, the parishioners themselves have been doing a lot of the heavy lifting. Here is a short movie and a picture of the older woman doing her part.

For about 16 years we have had a working relationship between Saint Jules Clinic and Sacred Heart Hospital in Milot Haiti.

The Saint Jules clinic is a primary care clinic staffed by a Haitian doctor, Haitian nurses, Haitian laboratory technicians, and a Haitian pharmacy technician. Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and its Haiti team sponsor this clinic.

There are multiple tragic cases and severe illnesses including cancers and major trauma that cannot be treated at our primary care clinic. For this reason we have established a working relationship with Sacred Heart Hospital in Milot in Northern Haiti.

The hospital is a Catholic tertiary medical center with emergency room, operating room and special care units.

In the past teams of volunteer American doctors would provide surgical services on our patients as well as provide teaching for the Haitian surgeons and staff in the hospital. In the last year all the American teams have canceled because of COVID and fortunately the trained Haitian staff has carried on providing excellent surgical and specialist care.

Every six months we receive an invoice from the hospital for our donation to pay for the care our referred patients receive. We recently received the invoice for 60 patients who received specialty and surgical care for $12,100. This averages out to about $200 per patient. This is a real bargain when compared to American hospitalization costs.

Thanks to the generosity of the immaculate Conception Haiti team and many donors we have been able to pay for the surgical care our patients receive on referral. We hope to continue to do this into the future.

Haiti Ministry announces a dollar for dollar match!!

Donate to help us build the Maternity Clinic depicted above and your donation will be matched dollar for dollar up to $25,000!!

There are 14,000 women of childbearing age in our twin parish of St. Jules who have no access to an OBGYN, prenatal care or help with complicated deliveries. Women have their babies lying on the dirt floor, in their one room thatched hut, with the help of a midwife. We have a chance to save lives by making delivery a much safer and cleaner experience for the mother and the baby.
This Maternity Clinic will be the second story of the existing St. Jules Medical Clinic. It will have a consultation room, an examination room, a delivery room, storage space and 2 bathrooms. The total cost of the new Clinic will be $56,000. We are working in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Haiti to provide us an OBGYN doctor for the Maternity Clinic.

Update on Our Twinned St. Jules School in Haiti

2021 brings sixty-one (61) years since founding of the Saint Jules school (twinned with IC) in Petit-Bourg du Borgne, Haiti. The school already has several generations of alumni, many of whom are doctors, nurses, agronomists, accountants, managers, administrators, lawyers, professors, and several candidates for elected positions.

Because it was the school that led other schools in the village. It was the pride of the parishioners, and it enjoyed an incredibly good reputation.

However, the various socio-political crises have hampered the proper functioning of the School. Children have dropped out of school under the influence of armed gangs. Children of parents who fled the village are not successful in school. Despite the great support received from Immaculate Conception Church to provide a hot meal (the school canteen) and to give a reasonable salary to teachers, retraining of teachers is necessary to restore the image of the school.

The Parish of Saint Jules has benefited from an unbelievably beautiful and magnificent school building. But today we must above all work on the quality of teaching, the acquisition of teaching materials for teachers, and the acquisition of school supplies, such as desks,and books for children. Yes, children have failed because they do not have classic books. Eighty percent (80%) of parents send children to school without being able to provide them with school materials. This factor has negatively contributed to the decline in the quality of teaching at the Saint Jules School.

However, we have the firm conviction that the Saint Jules School can be a center of development for the entire area (the central village and five communal sections). After a study and an evaluation carried out at the beginning of March 2021 by the current parish priest, Father Snell Armand Nord csc, and a team of two education experts, it is imperative to add a professional section to allow young people to learn a manual trade, such as tiling, plumbing, cabinet making, carpentry, welding, cutting, and sewing, cooking (culinary art), etc. The more the level of education increases, the more we create opportunities for development. Haiti needs well trained and educated technicians, young men, and women. Therefore, we have opted for a holistic education to bring a change of mentality, to build social peace, political tolerance, and to finally raise the standard of living of Haitians. It is necessary to break the paths of death in Haiti through education, and evangelization.

What is a Missionary?
I remember as a child, I attended Vacation Bible School. I had just finished fourth grade. The last day, we all gathered, listening to closing remarks. I remember the following, ‘We are all missionaries.’ I thought, what? Not me. I sat there wearing shorts, a tank top and pig tails. (Can’t forget the pig tails!) I thought, no, missionaries travel to third world countries and preach the gospel and feed the poor. Not me, I could not do that.

But what is a missionary? Is it someone that invites a neighbor to attend church ? Is it someone donating food and clothing to help the poor? Is it giving time and money to charity? Is it taking time to talk to a friend in need?

Is it also adopting a sister church in a third world country? It is helping that sister church build a medical clinic to serve the poor? Is it doctors and nurses volunteering to assist and teach? Is it others giving of time and talent?

What is a missionary? We can all be missionaries by joining the IC/ Haiti 100 Club! As missionaries, we are lending a hand.
What or who is a missionary? We are all missionaries!
