Mecklenburg Junior Women's Association

Mecklenburg Junior Women's Association The Junior Hostess Association was founded by Mrs. C. Linwood Holt in 1981. The first annual Cotillion was held July 24, 1982.

The junior hostesses consisted of 25 high school girls from Mecklenburg County who served as hostesses at the historic Prestwould House. Their duties included assisting Prestwould Foundation during numerous activities at the stone mansion located just north of Clarksville and overlooking Buggs Island Lake. In August 1991, the organization's name was changed to Mecklenburg Junior Women's Associatio

n. The MJWA is a service organization dedicated to the development, assistance and promotion of young women in fulfillment of civic, charitable, cultural, and educational responsibilities in their communities. The organization's insignia depicts four symbols representative of its goals - a heart for charitable endeavors, a candle for enlightment and knowledge, a book for expansion of cultural experiences and a scale for a balance of activities to ensure good citizenship and responsibility to the community.

We are so pleased to present Ms. Kellyanne Tyner with the $500 MJWA scholarship for the 2019-2020 year. Kellyanne joined MJWA as a rising freshman in 2016, and has been a faithful servant to our organization and the community throughout her high school career. She supported MJWA as an officer her Sophomore year as Treasurer, Junior year as Vice-President, and Senior year as Secretary. She also exceeded the expected number of volunteer hours each year, and only missed a very few meetings and no events. We hope these funds will help in some small way as she attends the University of Virginia this fall. We are all so proud of you, and know you will take the Educational, Charitable, Civic, and Cultural ideals we have practiced together with you wherever you go!

In the past, MJWA members would meet once a month to turn in their volunteer hours & plan events. We found that this monthly schedule of meetings, did not work very well with the demanding schedules of our members. This year, we made a positive change to only 4 meetings for the year. Today we met at Boydton Baptist Church to discuss our Spring schedule. Lots of exciting things coming! 🌸🌸

The Winter Formal committee helped their fellow MJWA members remember the importance of giving this holiday season, by having each girl decorate & fill a bag with goodies. The members brought those bags with them, to the dance, this past Saturday. Today the bags were delivered to Meadowview Terrace by Jane-Clare Elliott & Chase City Health & Rehab by Emma Newcomb. Graciously receiving the bags in Clarksville was Marisa Fisher & in Chase City was April Edmonds. 🌸
