NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2024:
We finished the year strong, with several cadets earning promotions. Congratulations!
Some highlights over the past 2 months included our participation in Fort Campbell’s inaugural Christmas parade. Maj Dill provided and experimental aircraft for our float, and the cadets and seniors passed out candy and helped make sure the wings didn’t hit any spectators or street signs! We held our annual holiday party, with lots of silliness and merriment – exactly what a holiday party should be! We had some really interesting classes. Major Alden challenged us to a wing design competition, culminating in a “wind tunnel” evaluation. Major Dill, a former airline pilot, gave the cadets insights on how best to pursue a commercial pilot career. Maj Fanelli provided instruction in leadership and character topics. Lt Regner walked the cadets through what it takes to be an airborne mission observer or scanner. 2Lt Shem helped cadets build some water rockets (with attached sparklers for night launch). Several cadets gave presentations as well. Our cadets continue to compete in StellarXplorers against teams across the US. On top of all that, we threw in a little physical training as well!

12/3/24: There’s some light snow falling, but we’re still meeting at 6 tonight. If you can’t make it, that’s fine.

National Blue Beret offers the opportunity to serve at one of the largest and most prestigious air shows in the world for about 150 Civil Air Patrol cadets 16 and older and 50 senior officers. The airshow at Oshkosh annually draws more than 500,000 people and over 10,000 aircraft to Wittman Field, making it America’s busiest civilian airport for that week each summer. Our very own 2Lt Hawthorne has participated when he was a cadet.

He recently taught our cadets some hand signals to guide aircraft. I'm not sure all the cadets here are ready to guide a 747 to the gate. But it's a great start! :-)

SEP/OCT: It’s been a while since the last Facebook update. Many new cadets have joined and completed their Great Start program. We’re now up to 28 registered cadets and 15 senior members! With such a large number of cadets, we really need adult volunteers. Consider helping us as a sponsor member (very little time commitment) or senior member (broader opportunities to help).

Highlights over the past few months include several cadet orientation flights in our Cessna 172, training our cadets in Emergency Services (one of Civil Air Patrol’s three primary programs), participating in StellarXplorers space design competition, as well as our usual classwork and activities in Leadership, Character, Aerospace, Fitness, and Promotions. These classes and activities are sometimes taught/led by seniors, at other times by our talented cadets!

Our Squadron is part of the Civil Air Patrol's Kentucky Wing. However, the Tennessee Wing extended an invitation to our cadets to participate in their encampment. And some of us did!
Here are two pictures (one serious, the other.... a little less so!)

JUNE 2024: It’s getting warmer… it must be summer! Congrats to our cadets who were promoted this month. Good job. This month we did some hangar clean-up, had our usual classes and training, enjoyed a guest speaker from Kentucky Wing, and several of our cadets went to Kentucky Wing encampment! Here are some pictures from encampment. For hundreds of encampment pictures, go to https://photos.cap.gov/Great-Lakes-Region/Kentucky-Wing/Encampment/2024-KYWG-Encampment.

APRIL 2024: Good things happened this month. Many of us became certified in BOTH CPR and First Aid. And we have the mannikins and bandages to prove it! (Certificates too). Thanks to Mr. Hawthorne for an excellent day of training. Learned some new games during physical training. We learned about followership (Yes, everyone has a boss). We made foil boats to understand the concept of displacement. All Cadets were asked to give a presentation on an Aerospace topic of their choice – as long as it began with the first letter of their name. Very informative presentations. We had promotions – Congrats to our newly promoted Cadets! And on our 5th Monday, games! But forgetting your CAP ID is no game. Bring it with you to all CAP meetings and events.

What are Orientation Flights?

Orientation flights, or "O-Flights" as they are commonly referred, are an opportunity for CAP cadets to experience flight first-hand.

Recently, some of our Cadets took to the skies in our squadron's aircraft, under the command of one of our qualified pilots, to gain an understanding of what is really involved in operating an aircraft from the pilot's perspective. During their flight, cadets had the chance to manipulate the flight controls and perform basic flight maneuvers under a defined educational flight syllabus.

Also in these pictures - some flight simulator experience.

Our Story

Since Civil Air Patrol’s formation during the earliest days of World War II, this vigilant organization of citizen Airmen has been committed to service to America. Founded on Dec. 1, 1941, to mobilize the nation's civilian aviation resources for national defense service, CAP has evolved into a premier public service organization that still carries out emergency service missions when needed — in the air and on the ground.

As a Total Force partner and Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, Civil Air Patrol is there to search for and find the lost, provide comfort in times of disaster and work to keep the homeland safe. Its 60,000 members selflessly devote their time, energy and expertise toward the well-being of their communities, while also promoting aviation and related fields through aerospace/STEM education and helping shape future leaders through CAP’s cadet program.

Civil Air Patrol’s missions for America are many, and today’s adults and cadets perform their duties with the same vigilance as its founding members — preserving CAP’s 75-year legacy of service while maintaining its commitment to nearly 1,500 communities nationwide.

Mission Statement Supporting America's communities with emergency response, diverse aviation and ground services, youth development and promotion of air, space and cyber power.
